Hollywood Regency Style Furniture and Decor

Everyone feels like a movie star in a room featuring Hollywood Regency style furniture and decor! This cool, classic and classy style looks as good in today’s homes as it did when it first emerged during Hollywood’s heyday. It is closely related to the Art Deco style, as you can see in my Guide to Art Deco Style Furniture but it is a distinct decor style of its own.

Hollywood Regency is a luxurious look that sparkles with glitz, glamour, and opulence. This type of furniture piece features a focus on clean lines, geometric shapes, glossy surfaces, and opulent textiles. The dramatic style has a sense of the theatrical, creating a chic stage for people to socialize and look fabulous while doing so.

What are the Origins of Hollywood Regency Style?

It is not surprising that Hollywood Regency style has an Art Deco feel as it developed during the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1920s and 1930s, the same years when Art Deco was a major new trend in interior design.

Movie-goers across the country were star-struck by Hollywood’s leading ladies and gentlemen, and were influenced by their opulent homes. Interior designers such as Dorothy Draper and actor-turned-designer William Haines were two of the taste-makers who established the look, which stayed popular through the 1950s. This photo of a foyer in the Greenbrier Hotel, designed by Dorothy Draper shows exactly why the style grabbed people’s attention!

Typical Features of Hollywood Regency Style Furniture and Decor

Typical features for Hollywood Regency style furniture and decor include:

  • Sleek and streamlined shapes are a hallmark of Hollywood glam, with a clean look to the silhouette. No fussy frills!
  • Glossy and reflective surfaces and finishes, including lacquer, gilding, crystal and mirrors galore. The minimalist lines of the furniture let the shine do the talking!
  • Lots of metals continue the sharp-edged and glamorous shine, including chrome, gold, brass, and polished nickel.

  • Patterns include blocks of contrasting color, animal prints, bold and oversized florals, chinoiserie, and also geometric patterns such as zig-zags. The Greek Key design is especially important.
  • Color schemes of Hollywood regency decor usually have a base of black and white or other neutrals such as ivory, cream, warm beige or camel, accented by pops of pure and vibrant color.
  • High contrast colors and a bold pattern (picture a cerise pink sofa against a black and white checkerboard floor) add to the drama.
  • Opulent fabrics soften the hard-edged mirrors and metals. Velvets and plush fabrics such as faux fur invite the touch. Sensual satins and crepe-de-chine are buttery soft and slinky, and fringes and tassel trims add to the lavish mood.
  • Spaces are intended for socializing and entertaining, so floor plans are open and furniture arranged so that people can gather for a gossipy chat, surrounded by fine Hollywood glamour.

Hollywood Regency Interior Design Tips

Hollywood Regency style furniture and decor lets you bring out your creative side with an elegant but lighthearted look that puts people at center stage. This style doesn’t take itself too seriously and you can go brave and bold. Life is a cabaret, old chum!

  • The living room is an easy place to start for this style but the look is also great for a bedroom to create decadence in the boudoir! Or glam up a powder room where you can make maximum impact in minimum space.
  • Start with a neutral base for your color scheme: black and white is always a winner, or elegant creams or beiges. Then choose one bold jewel color to create a bold contrast in soft furnishings, sculptural pieces, lighting or other home accents.

  • Choose glossy and lacquered surfaces to create lots of shine and reflection.
  • Add a beautiful mirror then add a couple more mirrors! One way to amp up the shine is in mirrored furniture, which can also create the illusion of a larger space as it reflects the room back to you. If you place a mirrored chest against a wall, it looks as though the floor extends further.
  • Soften the clean lines and hard edged mirrors and metals with sensual fabrics such as velvet or faux fur.
  • Hang a large black and white print of a famous movie star on the wall, or pick a statement piece such as a big sculptural vase or a statue as a focal point.
  • Keep the space clutter-free to maintain focus on the dramatic silhouettes and contrasting patterns and colors. Only use one or two patterns such as an animal print or Greek Key design, so it doesn’t look busy and kitschy.
  • Keep the floor plan open so it’s easy to circulate and socialize, and focus on smaller scale furniture with low lines so that the emphasis is on the people in the room, not the mammoth size furniture!

Tobi Fairley for Woodbridge: Designer Furniture

Tobi Fairley For Woodbridge Furniture CompanyThe many talents of Interior designer Tobi Fairley have been recruited by Woodbridge Furniture Company to create a special collection that we know our customers will love!

Tobi Fairley is an award-winning and internationally acclaimed interior designer. She focuses on chic, classic, streamlined interior designs, and then gives them a major dose of glamor. She brings the same vision to the furniture she’s designed for Woodbridge.

(She’s perched here on a lacquered blue side table that you can find for sale on our website.)

Woodbridge Tobi Fairley Ellison Writing DeskIf you enjoy Hollywood Regency style, you will love the Tobi Fairley for Woodbridge collection. If you admire style icon Katherine Hepburn, you definitely have to check this collection out.  I’m convinced Ms. Hepburn with her tailored but bold taste would be the first to order some of these pieces! This stunning Tobi Fairley Ellison writing table or desk is a great example. If Hepburn were filming “Woman of the Year” today, this is the desk that would be used by the  the fast-talking journalist character she plays as she squabbles with Spencer Tracy!

Woodbridge Tobi Fairley Ellison Cocktail Table PinkTobi Fairley is known for her work with color and pattern, and you can see the results here in this decadently delicious cocktail table which is crafted with a sleek blush pink lacquered top that is accented by a gold leaf design. The base is an elegant gray, a classic combination of gray and pink that was popular in Art Deco days!

Woodbridge Tobi Fairley White Console TableSometimes the silhouette and superb finish does all the talking, without any need for color or pattern at all. This elegant new Woodbridge Tobi Fairley Gabrielle console table or hall table earns its allure from the white lacquered top on the solid hardwood construction, combined with those seductive cabriole legs which give a little French accent to the otherwise minimalist design.

Woodbridge Tobi Fairley Drop Leaf TableTobi Fairley’s designs have been featured in major magazines from House Beautiful to Traditional Home to Veranda, because her sense of style is so appealing to many different people. This drop leaf Tobi Fairley dining table is a case in point. The incredibly interesting dining table stands on eight multi ringed turned posts that open out when you want to extend the drop leaves. Otherwise the cherry veneered table with brass accents closes down to a fairly narrow profile. This is great if you need a smaller footprint table when you are not entertaining! Notice the carved claw feet that hold crystal-look balls… that is exactly the kind of attention to detail that elevates the Tobi Fairley for Woodbridge furniture designs to another level.

Best Of April 2015: Art Deco and Hollywood Regency

We’ve had a glamorous month of Art Deco and Hollywood Regency style on our home decor and furniture blog. I also shared my own vintage decor tale with an update on our Bathroom Penny Tiles Project in our 1920s vintage bungalow renovation. (You’ll see a bit of glitter in there too!) Here are our favorite blog posts this month:

Ambella Home Voranado tableOur customer spotlight about this Ambella Home accent table in Nellie’s Californian home set the tone for sparkling April. The blog post shows photos of the Voronado table with its mirrored accents and gold leaf finish – it looks fab in Nellie’s handsome house!

Ambella Home Casablanca chest mirrored

This inspired me to explore more of the magic of mirrors in my post on Hollywood Regency style and mirrored furniture.   The beauty of sleek mirrored furniture is evident, but there are also practical reasons to choose and use mirrored furniture in your home. You can create clever illusions to brighten and visually expand your space.  I’ve rarely heard anyone complain about a room being TOO light and spacious!

Ambella Home Art Deco Bed Manhattan

The natural next step was to look at elegantly glossy and streamlined Art Deco furniture. My  post on the Art Deco Bedroom not only showed this incredible new Ambella Home Manhattan bed that was featured in a Houzz.com editorial on Art Deco, but I also gave a sneak peek at some antique Art Deco furniture due to arrive on our next container from France.

French Antique Grandfather ClockBetween our celebrations of the 1920s and 1930s, we turned our gaze back a few decades further. This antique Brittany clock looks amazing in my story on the antique French longcase clock in Loren’s home in Texas. The chestnut carved grandfather clock dates to about 1880 or 1900 and the floral brass detail around the enamel clock face suggests  that it was a wedding gift. See more photos and a close up of the clock in our antique Brittany clock post.

I’ll share more photos of customers’ homes and gorgeous antiques and home decor ideas next month. If you have a question about vintage or antique furniture or lighting, home accents and accessories, I’d love to hear from you!  Send me an email or comment on this blog or head over to our EuroLux Facebook page.

Decorating with Mirrored Furniture

Ambella Home Voranado tableLast week, as the latest in our series of client decor spotlights, I showed you photos of Nellie V.’s home in San Diego, CA, with the Ambella Home mirrored accent table that she bought from us. Looking at the pictures of this elegant and dramatic table made me want to write more about the mirrored furniture trend!

Often you’ll see mirrored furniture in a Hollywood Regency style room, evoking Hollywood’s glamorous golden era of the 1920s and 1930s. Shiny finishes, including lacquer, gilding and (yes!) mirrors are typical of the luxurious Hollywood Regency look.

Currey Mirrored ConsoleFor example, this new Currey & Co mirrored console table features a traditional Greek key pattern on the legs, but the streamlined geometry also reminds me of Art Deco. The wrought iron table has a gleaming silver leaf and antique mirror finish and the simple lines let the shine do the talking!

Why decorate with mirrored furniture? Well, a room full of mirrored pieces would be too much dazzle (Hello, Liberace!) but a single accent piece creates a stunning focal point.

antiqued mirrored credenzaThe mirror also adds light to the room, or makes the most of every speck of light that you have. In daylight, it makes the room look brighter. If you enjoy candlelight, then the mirroring will reflect the warm glow for a romantic atmosphere. This Currey & Co credenza boasts antiqued mirroring on the doors – perfect with the faded walnut and gold highlights.

Ambella Home Casablanca chest mirrored A piece of mirrored furniture also creates the illusion of more space as it reflects the room back to you. If carefully placed, it can conjure up quite a magical effect! A mirrored chest of drawers against a wall makes a small room look bigger as it tricks the eye into thinking that the floor extends further than it does. The Morrocan style of this Ambella Home mirrored chest of drawers proves the point and also shows that mirrored furniture doesn’t have to be a Bling Fest!

Currey Kramer Drinks TableFor another subtle mirrored accent, this Kramer drinks table by Currey & Co combines modernity with classical symmetry. The antiqued mirror top sits sleekly on the warm bronze gold finished tapered pedestal.

As a general tip, I’ve talked before about the research on the value of buying better quality furniture. When you’re buying mirrored pieces it’s even more important to buy high quality furniture. Solid pieces with a decent weight and high-quality mirrored detail creates a look of luxe. But a mirrored accent piece that is cheap, tinny, and poorly made can appear more garish than glitzy.

Finally, this Solana mirrored bed made by Hooker Furniture shows that mirrored accents can really work with any style. The refined rustic bed features a decorative mirrored panel headboard with curvy, almost Art Nouveau detail. It would be the focal point of any bedroom.

Ambella Home Accent Table

Of all the beautiful Ambella Home console tables and accents tables that we stock, the Voronado accent table is one of the most dramatic.  So it’s great to have a chance to show it off in this customer spotlight!

Ambella Home Voranado table

Nellie V. in San Diego, CA bought the Voronado fluted accent table from us. This is the table in the catalog shot.  Glamorous, huh? It combines style with substance though. As with all Ambella Home Collection furniture, it is meticulously crafted. The solid mindi wood table features mirrored accents all around to reflect the light.

Ambella Home Mirrored table top

Here’s a close-up of the table top because it’s really hard to photograph mirrored furniture when the piece is in a room. It just reflects all the light and colors surrounding it! But this bird’s eye view shows the great shape of the sunburst design.

Ambella Home Voranado pedestal table

A close-up of the Voranado pedestal table scroll feet shows the attention to detail in the craftsmanship, as well as the textured gold leaf finish. So now let’s see the table in Nellie’s home in California…

Hollywood Regency Style at home

You can tell how shiny and clear the high-quality mirrored table top is because it reflects the leather wall panels in every intricate detail. Those handsome wall panels have a little dark gold in them, which I’m sure ties in nicely with the gold leaf table finish.

The chairs boast a lovely satin silver upholstery. “I just got them, that is why I was looking for the table with mirror,” Nellie told me. “It actually looks much better live than on the pictures.” Well, the pictures make it all look fabulous enough so the in-person effect must be stunning!

Voranado accent table

When I first looked at the photos Nellie sent, I was wowed by what a gorgeous floor she has. I’ve never seen wooden floors with a herringbone pattern before. I wondered if she lives in an old house… so I asked her.

Nellie said that the house is a mere 15 years old and she bought it new. The herringbone wood floors were installed 5 years during a remodeling. “We were going for the old European look throughout,” said Nellie.

Nellie also mentioned that the room is round, so that informed her choice to pick a round accent table.

The Ambella Home Voronado accent table is a piece that could fit with a variety of home decor styles, but many people would consider it a great example of Hollywood Regency style. Hollywood Regency style harkens back to the most luxurious golden era of Hollywood around the 1930s and it combined a bunch of different influences. Those influences include the most glamorous elements of English and French Regency furniture as well as the chic allure of Art Deco design. Opulent gilded finishes are typical of the look, as are reflective surfaces from lacquered finishes to glittering mirrored furniture like this Ambella Home table.

I’ll write more about the trend and especially the mirrored furniture trend in another blog post later this month. Till then, thank you Nellie for giving us a glimpse inside your home so we can enjoy your exquisite mirrored accent table!
