More time is spent in the bedroom than any room in the home. The mood of the room sets the tone of your day when you wake up, and lets you unwind as you go to sleep. With that in mind, it's important to go all-out on this space's decor! Purchasing an antique bed is an investment to say the least.

Quality bedroom furniture can cost a pretty penny, especially when it comes to the centerpiece: a bed. To avoid the buyer's remorse that can come with such a large purchase, it's important to know what to look for. Fortunately, by the end of this guide, you'll be much better prepared to pick your next favorite piece of bedroom furniture.

1.How to Make Sure Your Antique Bed is Actually Antique

Unfortunately, you can't believe everything you read on the internet. The internet is plagued with bad information and false advertising. Many "antique style" beds are incorrectly listed as antique furniture.

Not that imitations can't be lovely additions to your home, but you want the real thing! There are a few ways you can make sure that your potential bed is an actual antique, and not a fake.

Look for Imperfections

Part of the appeal of antique furniture is that it was made by hand, and not in a factory. The human element behind beautiful craftsmanship is part of the charm. After all, furniture is an art. Whether or not a piece has these human touches can tell you about its history.

Modern and factory made furniture will have perfectly straight edges and virtually no blemishes. We would expect nothing less from a piece made by a robot!

Look for slight curves in the solid wood. If there is variation/inconsistency in the joints of the the furniture, chances are it was made by hand! We always recommend taking a look in person before ordering online, if possible.

A piece that is perfectly symmetrical is also likely to be more recent. Humans are not perfect creatures! Slight asymmetry is generally a dead giveaway that a piece of furniture was crafted by hand.

Varied Wood is Good

It is highly, highly unusual for an antique bed, or any piece of antique furniture for that matter, to be made out of solely one type of wood. Even if a majority of an antique piece is crafted from a solid wood such as mahogany, chances are some joint or support will be crafted from a different type. If you notice that there are multiple woods used, that's a good indicator that you're looking at a genuine antique.

Check the Label

Another good way to determine a piece's age is by a maker's mark. Generally speaking, antique craftsmen would carve some form of signature or number into the wood. Usually, these carvings or stamps are fairly discrete.

Check on the underside or lower edge of the furniture in question. It's also important to remember that these can also be faked, so it's a good idea to check for signs of aging.

2.You Might Need a Custom Mattress

This may come as a surprise, but the standardization of bed sizes is a relatively new development in home decor. Back in the old days, there were no king beds, queen beds, or double beds- there were just beds of all different shapes and sizes. The sizes we're familiar with today originated in the mid-late 20th century.

This makes finding the right mattress more of a challenge, but not an insurmountable one. There are many companies that can provide you with a custom fitted mattress that will suit your specific needs.

3.Match Your Styles

It seems intuitive to match your furniture styles. However, this doesn't mean that every piece of furniture in your bedroom has to be the exact same style in order to provide a cohesive look. This doesn't mean you should randomly try to mix Victorian with Mid-Century Modern furniture, of course. But if you have some Gothic pieces in your bedroom set, you can probably get away with a Chippendale centerpiece, as the 2 are stylistically similar.

You may also need a custom headboard. To learn more about these, you can check out our post about them here!

It's also important to make sure your antique bed's finish matches with the color scheme of the room. Once again, this doesn't need to be a perfect match right down to the color code, but it should at least complement the room's layout.

It's also worth noting that not every piece of furniture in your scheme has to be antique in order to create a cohesive look. There are a wide variety of antique style (not antique) pieces that can blend well with older decor.

4.Take Your Time When Looking for an Antique Bed!

As a final piece of general advice, it's important to remember that the process of buying an antique bed is just that - a process. It's the type of decision that can and should take hours of careful consideration. Whether you're in the market for an antique queen bed frame or a vintage poster bed, patience is a virtue.

Investments of this size deserve caution and research. Take the steps needed to make sure that the bed in question is an actual antique. Look into custom mattresses so that you aren't blindsided by the lack of standardized sizes. Make sure to take into account how one style blends with another.

Remember, not every piece has to be of the exact same style, but it should be pretty close for best results.

Hopefully, with these tips in mind, you'll be on your way to creating the perfect bedroom!

Rococo Design: Ornate and Extravagant

Ornate brass accents adorn the tops of the curved cabriole legs at the front of the chest. The little figures on the drawer handles, as well as the brass head on the chest apron, show excellent details. With a sensuous and luxurious appeal that would improve any design, this is the epitome of Rococo extravagance. The traditional Rococo French chest of drawers offers both efficient storage and beautiful good aesthetics, making it an excellent choice for any traditional French design scheme.

Curves, curves, curves!

On walls, ceilings, and moldings, the Rococo style included elaborate interlacings of curves and countercurves based on the fundamental shapes of the "C" and "S," as well as shell patterns and other natural shapes. Asymmetrical design was the rule. Light pastels, ivory white, and gold were the primary hues, and Rococo decorators commonly used mirrors to emphasize the feeling of open space. It is distinguished by its lightness, grace, and enthusiastic use of curved natural shapes in decorating. Rococo is derived from the French word rocaille, which refers to shell-covered rockwork used to decorate artificial grottoes. To see more furniture with good curves, check out our post here!

If you're into old furniture, you know nothing makes a statement in your home quite like a quality antique bed. Something about the class and style of these pieces keeps designers coming back. Simply put, they don't carve bed frames, headboards and footboards quite like they used to! In the age before machine carving, the quality of bedroom furniture was decided by the skill of the craftsman and the quality of materials. Each piece was crafted in its own unique way, without the standardized sizes and parts. What does that mean for furniture enthusiasts looking to add antique style to their bedroom? And how do you go about choosing the right antique bed for your home?

In this post, we'll go over some of our favorite styles of 19th century and 20th century beds, as well as go over some of the ins-and-outs that will make your interior decorating life easier.

The Best Antique Beds

Whether you're looking for a taste of the French countryside, or the prestige of a London palace, an antique bed is a great place to start.

Victorian

Named after Queen Victoria and the era of English prosperity she helped to usher in,  this style is sure to make you feel like royalty. Often crafted from solid woods such as antique oak, a Victorian style piece would be a great fit in your elegant bedroom set. This is a relatively popular style, so it won't be too difficult to find other antique furniture to complement your bedroom's centerpiece. Victorian beds always impress. Similar styles include the Regency style.

Louis XVI

The Louis XVI style, as you may be able to guess because of its name, is an antique French furniture movement. Characteristics of this style include taking a neoclassical approach, which means there are themes and motifs from ancient Greek architecture. Whether you choose a rosewood, oak, or mahogany bed in this style, we think you'll be impressed.

What You Should Know About Antique Beds

Whether you choose an iron bed, 4-poster bed, canopy bed or brass bed, picking the right antique piece can be a journey. There are more elements to take into account than just looks. For example, since these pieces were crafted before standardized sizes, you may need to get a customized mattress to fit the bedframe. In the old days, there weren't king size beds, queen size beds, full size beds or double beds- they were tailored to the requirements of the user. If you need a custom mattress designed for one of your bed frames, here is a good place to start. One thing is certain- whether you choose a Rococo, Louis XV, Mid-Century Modern, French Country, or Art Deco bed, you'll be making a style statement in your antique bedroom or guest room. We wrote a post covering all of the staples of bedroom furniture. If you're interested in learning more, you can check it out here.

The average human spends more time in the bedroom than in any other space in the home. Quality interior design can ensure that that time is well spent! Everyone wants to sleep in style, to wake up in an immaculately decorated area. But with so many furniture and lighting options, the process of creating your perfect sleeping  can seem daunting. But if you stick to your style and know how to pick the right pieces, you’ll be living in luxury for years to come.

Bedroom Ideas: Picking Your Style

If you can imagine it, then chances are a furniture maker has created it. Interior design is an art form that has been honed for centuries to match all sorts of tastes.

Victorian Style Decor

If you’re looking for a regal, old fashioned style, we’d recommend checking out some Victorian pieces. As the name would suggest, this style is inspired by the craftsmanship of 19th century England. This is a great route to go when considering how to decorate your bedroom.

You can consider Victorian design a “revivalist” style- that means that its original creators used motifs from other styles past. A history within a history, if you will, since many of Victorian pieces you’ll find are genuine antiques! Tastes change over the centuries, but this English furniture style has withstood the test of time. As an added benefit, referencing other styles means Victorian furniture can match with most Old World styles too. Versatility, beauty, and craftsmanship from generations ago- what’s not to love?

Mid-Century Modern Design

Maybe you’re a more modern person. But not too modern. If that’s the case, then perhaps the Mid-Century would be a better fit. As the name suggests, this type of design rose to prominence in the 20th century. Its sleek, clean lines are a change of pace from more antiqued furniture styles, reflecting the modern, changing mindset of the era. If you’ve ever watched the show Mad Men and admired the layout, this is the design for you! This is a style that will fit well if your desired home decor is more contemporary, but might look out of place among the patinas and veneers of antique furniture.

French Bedroom Furniture

As European antiques dealers, we can’t help but give a mention to a wide array of antique French furniture styles. Many of Europe’s most prominent design movements originated from France. It was customary for many monarchs to popularize their own furniture styles, leaving a creative legacy that still exists today! Whether you’re looking at a Louis XV or Louis Philippe piece, one thing you’ll notice is how each ruler adds a touch of their own personality. For example, if the King was an avid hunter, then the carvings might include animal scenes.

Whatever your style, just know that you have options. There really is something for everyone in the world of furniture.

A tip about antique beds- most antique beds were made before the standardization of mattress sizes. You’ll probably need to have a mattress fitted for optimal comfort, but we think the luxury makes it worth it. Back when furniture was designed by and for kings, king size was whatever the king wanted it to be.

How do I tell if my furniture is high quality?

So you've decided how to decorate your bedroom, and now you're choosing your pieces. The first thing you should look at is the material used. High quality furniture is generally crafted from solid wood such as mahogany or oak. These materials make up most antique furniture, and are a large part of why it lasted long enough to become antique!

Depending on the age of the furniture, imperfections may be a good sign! Keep in mind that most antiques were crafted by hand. A slight curve or blemish in the construction can signify that the piece is a legitimate antique, not made on an assembly line. A slightly crooked desk may actually be much more valuable than a perfectly shaped one! Not to say that modern pieces aren’t lovely as well. It’s just important to consider the age of your bedroom decor when making any judgements. A slight blemish here and there won’t harm the integrity of the piece- it’s survived this long, after all.

If you find something in need of refurbishing, don't write it off just yet! Check out our guide here to see if your piece is salvageable.

BONUS TIP: If you’ve found what you’re looking for, don’t forget to measure your door frame to make sure it fits! This is usually only a problem with larger pieces of furniture, such as sofas and desks. Still, there’s nothing worse than finding your next centerpiece, only to realize you can’t get it inside the house!

Organizing Your Bedroom Furniture

So you’ve picked your style. You’ve bought all the furniture you need, and have even managed to get it through the door! So now what? It’s time to arrange.

A few things to keep in mind- first, make sure to consider natural lighting when placing your bed. You may not want the sun shining in your eyes every morning. Or maybe you do. You’ll probably want to choose a lighter color of paint, even if you have dark furniture. This is because dark furniture has a way of absorbing sunlight. The more natural rays flowing into your room, the more spacious it will feel and the more it will complement your furniture.

Storage Matters

Unless your bedroom is several square miles across, you’ll have to think about space limitations. Fortunately, there are a variety of lovely decor options that serve this practical purpose. Maybe a dresser with plenty of drawers could be the versatile piece your home needs. Nightstands, especially larger ones, are also a great way to meet this need. If you can imagine a piece of bedroom furniture, chances are a storage variant of the piece exists! We’ve even seen footboards with added compartments for your belongings. The more items you can store in your furniture, the more room you have for furniture.

Tall furniture such as shelves or tall dressers can also be a great way to preserve floor space. Think vertically!

Bedroom Lighting

The lighting you choose for your space will drastically impact the look of your furniture. Whether it's bedside lighting or a chandelier hanging from your bedroom ceiling, picking the right light fixtures is important. When deciding how to decorate your bedroom, you've got to think of the glow!

Not every room is wired properly for a ceiling light, and not ever ceiling is tall enough for a chandelier! This can seem like a barrier between you and your bedroom lighting ideas. Fortunately, there are still plenty of great choices, such as floor lamps, table lamps, wall sconces and more. Remember, lighting has as many different different styles as furniture, so make sure the piece you get matches the rest of your interior design! Victorian style overhead lighting probably wouldn't be a very good blend with a Mid-Century Modern bedroom.

For a more in-depth look at one of our favorite lighting choices, check out our chandeliers guide here!

And of course, we can't forget natural light. A few well placed mirrors can amplify the sun coming through your windows, providing a warmth only nature can offer!

Combine the right ambiance from natural light sources with quality lighting fixtures and your furniture will thank you for it!

Picking the Right Bed

Most standard furniture rules apply to your potential bed. You're looking for something made out of a solid, high quality wood. Whether it's a modern bed or antique bed, the bed frame should be sturdy. If you're going with a piece that has an upholstered headboard, make sure it's crafted from leather, faux leather, or a durable fabric. The last thing you want is a scratch or tear in your brand new king bed!

Here's an example we couldn't help but mention. We delivered this Louis XV bed to a customer in Ocean Springs, MS. Notice the level of detail in the carving. It may sit low to the ground, but it's certainly not low profile! The bed design features an ornate wood frame, carved on every inch. There is not a single space on this piece that its creator did not decorate.

This bed is a lovely intersection between the Rococo and Louis XV styles. French Rococo is a tried and true movement in home decor. It often features these sweeping curved lines, adding a sense of elegance. This particular bed is crafted from walnut wood, guaranteeing its stability. After all, that's why this piece has lasted since the early 1900s!

Don't Forget Platform Beds!

A platform bed may provide a "sleeker" look than a traditional box spring, if that's what you're going for. These can still offer all the lovely upholstery, tufted headboards and modern design you could want! Platform bed frames come in all shapes and sizes, with different slat types to suit your needs. You could even consider a metal platform bed for added stability. Contemporary beds are often crafted with specially engineered wood to produce the same durability.

A flat platform bed.

Don't forget about storage beds either. These are a great way to improve storage space in a small room, making even more room for your furniture!

Keeping Your Bedroom Decor Personal

At the end of the day, everything comes down to your own personal taste. We can help point you in the right direction, but home decor is an art- it reflects who you are. There's no "correct" headboard to choose, and there's no accent lighting that will work in every situation. You are the master of your own master bedroom.

If you're a minimalist person, then choose a minimal style! There's no need to overdo it if you don't consider yourself a fancy person.

Whether you have a modern style approach, or an antique bed that fits into neither the king size or queen size category, there are options.

Don't Forget Bedroom Accessories

Once you've got your fundamental pieces in place, it's time to fill in the gaps. This is where you can really let your personality take over! For additional floor decor, maybe an area rug could be the splash of color you need! These can create a focal point, and enhance a small space or piece of furniture. A set of throw pillows could make a daybed pop!

A light brown throw pillow.
Throw Pillow

A bookcase could be great for any readers out there, and has the benefit of storage space to organize your belongings! It also opens up even more decorating ideas, giving you the option to display all your favorite trinkets.

With these tips, you'll be sleeping in luxury! Don't forget that your home decor is a reflection of you and your tastes. There's no right or wrong way to do it, so get creative!

French Hunting style furniture and decor became popular in the court of King Francis I in the 1500s. Yet four hundred years later, it looks just as good in today's homes. An impressive yet comfortable and welcoming style of decor, the French Hunting style is a great choice for people who enjoy an elevated rustic look. And no, you don't have to be a hunter to appreciate this fine craftsmanship.

The Origins of French Hunting Style Furniture and Decor

Antique French Carved Henry II Buffet

The French Hunting style was made popular by King Francis I (1515 - 1547) who ruled in France at around the same time as King Henry VIII ruled across the channel in England.

Francis I was a great supporter of the arts, especially Italian Renaissance art and architecture. He even tempted Leonardo da Vinci to move to France to create art in the King's court! King Francis spent a lot of money building and renovating castles and grand stately homes, including Château Fontainebleau, Château d'Amboise and Château de Blois.

Whatever the king did, the royal court followed. Aristocrats also began building châteaux and hunting lodges in the countryside near Paris in the rural Loire Valley. King Francis established a style of decorating these new buildings in a way that was inspired by the hunt and rural life, as well as noble mythological beasts that reflected the regal power of the monarchy. The aristocrats picked up on the look too, of course, following the taste of their King. Thus the French Hunting style was born. Whether this style is featured on a sideboard, buffet, or any other piece, the charm of this antique French style is truly special.

Renaissance Revival Hunting Style

Hunting style returned to popularity centuries later in France during the Renaissance Revival era in the late 19th century, when the newly wealthy middle class was keen to buy large, ornate and heavily-carved furniture to show off their rise in status. The Hunting style checked all the boxes, boasting fine craftsmanship in the carved details that was sure to impress. It was a very decorative look adorned with carved foliage, vines and animals, as well as handsome barley twists, yet this ornate style was still practical and comfortable to live with, focusing on dark woods rather than glitzy or gilded finishes.

What are the Origins of Hollywood Regency Style?

It is not surprising that Hollywood Regency style has an Art Deco feel as it developed during the Golden Age of Hollywood in the 1920s and 1930s, the same years when Art Deco was a major new trend in interior design.

Movie-goers across the country were star-struck by Hollywood's leading ladies and gentlemen, and were influenced by their opulent homes. Interior designers such as Dorothy Draper and actor-turned-designer William Haines were two of the taste-makers who established the look, which stayed popular through the 1950s. This photo of a foyer in the Greenbrier Hotel, designed by Dorothy Draper shows exactly why the style grabbed people's attention!

Home Decor boosted by an Antique Buffet

We met Phil and Mary in our antiques store in Newberry. They came to find a buffet to function as a dresser between two closets in their master bedroom. Mary explained they have been building their dream chateau over the past ten years. They are finally starting to pull it all together. They had very specific dimensions and wanted a beautiful antique buffet in a French Country style. After measuring and remeasuring, they decided on our  gorgeous walnut Louis XVI buffet. Phil said that Mary had her eye on a pair of Italian Blackamoor floor lamps too and he wanted us to deliver those as a birthday surprise for her.

An American French Chateau

When we arrived at their gorgeous home in Greenwood, SC, we certainly admired the gorgeous stone exterior. It looks much like a French chateau. The bottom first floor has been built into the hill beneath the home and this is the view from the back garden looking out over the lake. It is stunning! Unfortunately the fountains had already been turned off for the winter season, so we didn't get photos. We'll have to come make another delivery in the spring! Mary tells us she loves spending time puttering in the gardens she has built around the back side of the home. This place gave off a great late 19th century/early 20th century furniture vibe. We could tell they had a great eye- each piece of furniture they owned has high-quality, and showed elite craftsmanship. From entryway to dining room furniture, their interior design was fantastic.

Antique Buffets: Bringing the Room Together
Stone entryway

Phil greeted us at the huge solid wood door under a brick archway and showed off the huge iron bell on a rope that functions as a doorbell. It is also how he lets Mary know it is time to come in out of the garden!

Mary and Phil explained they had designed the entire home themselves based on places they had seen in France and have done much of the work themselves - including building the barrel arch supports on which the brick mason worked to create the amazing arched entry hall!

Venetian Blackamoors

Phil thought the hand-carved and painted Venetian Blackamoors that he bought in our store would grace the entry way to the castle with their candelabra. (We still have a similar lamp number P-49 available.) Phil surprised Mary with the lamps as a gift, and they do help light up the entrance to the keep! However, on a second delivery to bring a vintage Renaissance style console table for the entry way, we found Mary had moved the Blackamoor lamps to either side of the grand stone fireplace. I didn't actually capture the entire fireplace because it is so tall!

And here is the antique French Country Louis XVI buffet that the couple chose for their master bedroom. It fits perfectly between the two closets... just as they planned! antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet The walnut French Country style antique buffet has lovely carvings on the door fronts and pretty shaping around the upper glass door. The mirror set in the back of the buffet gives a nice sense of light and reflection. This is a great choice of buffet to repurpose as a dresser in the bedroom!

A sight to behold!

After we had delivered the Venetian lamps and the antique French Country Louis XVI buffet, Mary and Phil came back to our antiques store to choose some other furniture. Check out my next blog post titled Client Spotlight: Vintage Renaissance Console Table to see more photos of the house from that second delivery. Meanwhile, we hope you agree with us that this couple has a truly beautiful home! As we head into the new year, it’s time for our annual round-up of our most popular antiques and home decor blog posts from 2018! Here is the first half of our Top 10 posts of the year…

1.   Client Spotlight: Antique Chinese Wedding Bed

antique Chinese wedding bed

As part of our series of client spotlights, I wrote in May about this exquisite antique Chinese wedding bed that had been due for demolition before we rescued it! You will also enjoy the unusual story of how it found a new home with our customer in Greenville, SC. It had traveled a long way from its origins in the Zhejiang Province in Eastern China, and it was all thanks to our customer's daughter's craving for Arby's that it landed in Greenville! Read the whole story about the beautiful Late Qing Dynasty bed with its twist of fate in my blog post about the Antique Chinese Wedding Bed.

2.   How to Fix Scratches on Antique Furniture

This year I made a video showing how to fix wood blemishes, watermarks and scratches on antique furniture using furniture crayons. It is an easy process to solve the problem we hear quite often from people who have antique furniture. Perhaps they've accidentally scratched the wood or maybe they've inherited an heirloom that needs some superficial dings tidied up. Along with the video in my How to Fix Scratches on Antique Furniture post  I've also given a written summary of the simple process. This was part of our series on antique furniture restoration tips and tricks.

3.    Decorating with Pink

Pink Choiserie Leciester Room Chatsworth HouseSometimes people can be wary of decorating with pink because they fear it might look too young and girly or sugary sweet, but in fact pink is an incredibly versatile shade that can be used in lots of sophisticated ways.

I wrote two blog posts to give you some inspiration about how to work pink into your interior design scheme. The first one was Decorating with Light Pink and I followed up with Decorating with Bright Pink.

This shows lots of ways to bring a blush of pink into your home, from the subtlety of ballet slipper pink to the elegance of rose or a rich jolt of fuchsia.

4.    What is the Renaissance Henry II Style of Antique Furniture?

Antique French Buffet Henry II Renaissance Buffet

Renaissance Henry II furniture is always in demand. In fact, this is one of the most popular styles of furniture in our EuroLuxHome.com online store. The noble Henry II style is very classic and beautifully carved, usually in oak or walnut wood. In my blog post What is the Renaissance Henry II Style of Antique Furniture? I tell you all about the history of the style and how to identify it.

I also share some photos of pieces of Henry II style furniture in our customers' homes so you can see for yourself just how handsome it looks!  This is part of my series of posts on the history and styles of antique furniture.

5.    Antique of the Week

Normandy Antique French bedWe had a lot of fun this year with a new series of social media posts about our “Antique of the Week.”

The #AntiqueOfTheWeek hashtag is our way of showcasing some pieces that our customers might like to see because they are especially wonderful, unusual and interesting.

Sometimes we highlighted a piece of antique furniture or an antique decorative object because it tied into the season or topical events.  For example, we chose this beautiful romantic French antique bed as our Antique of the Week to honor the royal wedding when Prince Harry married Meghan Markle.

We use the hashtag #AntiqueOfTheWeek on our accounts on on Pinterest, Facebook and Google+ so if you aren’t following those accounts already, you can search on that #AntiqueOfTheWeek hashtag.

Happy new year to everyone! If you enjoyed this, see the rest of our picks for the year at this link for the Part 2 of our top 10 decor and antiques blog posts of 2018.[related_products is_auto_added="1"]

French Heritage Vivienne End TableAlthough the furniture draws on classic French taste, the pieces are often given a little contemporary twist. This makes them perfect for today’s homes.

The French inspiration is authentic. The company’s co-founder is French. His eye for style is inspired by his childhood memories of browsing around Parisian antique markets. He married an American fashion model, so the dynamic duo decided to combine heritage French furniture design with a fashion-forward creative edge.
