A tall, wooden Hunting style buffet

Imagine this exquisite antique French Hunting style buffet in your library, home office, corridor, or living room, housing your collection of books while also serving as a lovely ornamental focal point. The antique Renaissance Hunting style buffet/bookcase comes from approximately 1880 and is a genuine import from France. It's beautifully carved and has a lot of interesting features. The lower doors feature a fox on one side and a hunting hound on the other, while the bookcase is constructed of oak with a lovely weathered patina. To see a video of this piece, check out our youtube channel here!

The Hunting Style

This is typical of the classic Hunting style, which dates back to King Francis I of France, who chose to furnish his royal hunting lodges with furnishings that emphasized the hunt's rural setting. The two creatures are sculpted with extraordinary lifelike detail. Because the fur on the dog and the fox appears to wave with the movement of the animals, the carver must have seen a lot of dogs sniffing for the scent! Other carvings include leafy greenery and a shield. Chicken wire is used on the upper two doors to give them a rustic hunting aspect. This lovely 1880 antique French Renaissance Hunting style bookcase has enough storage in the main and lower cabinets, as well as two drawers.

Hunting Buffets are always a great choice!

The carvings on an antique buffet

Nothing adds style to your home quite like an antique buffet or sideboard. Whether it's a marble top Louis XV piece or an antique oak buffet with a hutch, one thing is sure- this type of furniture makes a statement. One of the best things about these is that you can put them anywhere, from the entryway to the dining area. They're great as storage cabinets, allowing you to store linens and other belongings. The fact that so many antique sideboard buffets from the 19th century still exist is a testament to their durability. Whether it's a solid oak, teak, inlaid, or mahogany buffet, you can be assured that these pieces will last a lifetime and then some. There's something for every taste, whether that's Jacobean or Art Nouveau.

This antique French Louis XV style buffet is a sight to behold. This piece would make an excellent addition in today's homes, even a hundred years after it was originally crafted.

Notice the ornate carvings that adorn this fine piece of furniture. The top middle cabinet features a floral pattern that is typical of this style. Notice the detail of the acanthus leaves- the craftsman who created this work of art clearly had an eye for detail. We can only imagine that furniture like this would be a great conversation starter with guests as it makes its presence known in the living room. It would also make an excellent gift for the interior design enthusiast in your life.

Elegant Luxury Style

This lavish look of the Louis XV period rose to popularity in the 18th century, and it was also influenced by the king’s favorite mistress Madame du Pompadour. During this Golden Age of decorative style in France, the new look was attractive to the king’s court.

Typical features of this French Rococo Louis XV style include ornate carvings including shells and wavy or watery shapes that look almost like frills. The shell is probably one of the most famous motifs of this period, often seen crowning a buffet or a bed headboard or on a chair rail. Read my Antique French Louis XV Buffet Client Spotlight to see more of this style.

In terms of top tier 19th century antique furniture, this piece has everything we love. From the wood frame to its ornate carvings, it's hard to imagine how this piece could be any better.

EuroLuxHome.com is now a US distributor for a very cool new line of furniture, Hobbs Germany!  We met David and Angelika at the High Point, NC, furniture market and fell in love with these unique pieces. They were looking for a US distributor who could handle shipments from Europe and a drop-ship model of business – voila! That’s us!

Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Wine Kitchen IslandThe wine-inspired furniture has a heavy-duty steel construction that is welded together for strength. The wooden tops are solid, European reclaimed oak. The kitchen islands have beautiful tops made of granite from Italy. But the coolest part is that the drawers, with heavy duty slide construction, are made from upcycled wine crates from the Bordeaux region of France. The stamps of the wine houses will of course vary from piece to piece but are all authentic. These are very high quality pieces and we felt they would be a great fit with our French antiques! See the full Hobbs Germany collection here.

Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Wine Bar CabinetAs the wood is reclaimed (perfect for the environmentally conscious and those who love upcycling!) there is heavy distressing that is a natural part of the product and will vary from piece to piece. The solid oak tops are stained a medium brown, which can also vary from piece to piece, as the natural wood soaks in the stain at different rates. The wood is then sealed and has a wax finish that is nice and smooth to the touch. The black Italian granite slabs used in the kitchen islands have a greyish brown veining.

Hobbs Germany Wine RackThe upcycled wine crates range in age to 10 – 15 years old and are actual wine shipping crates from true vineyards in the Bordeaux region of France with the stamps of the vineyards on the crates. The crates sit on and are adhered to solid oak shelves with heavy-duty, high-quality thick metal drawer slides.

Hobbs Germany Bordeaux Wine Box HutchCustomers may fill the drawers with 12 wine bottles without worry that the shelves cannot hold the weight. Also, as the crates are solidly attached to the oak shelves, they cannot be accidentally pulled out of the unit. For instance if a child were to pull a drawer of 12 wine bottle out on top of himself, he could be seriously injured. However, that could not happen with these drawers. Definitely German engineering. 😉

Lamp Table with WheelsIn addition to the larger pieces which are wonderful for a dining room, kitchen, or home bar, the Hobbs Germany Bordeaux collection includes smaller pieces of furniture like this two-drawer lamp table. Very charming in your French-inspired decor!

In my blog post on the the story behind Hobbs Germany I share more photos and tell you about the British gentleman and his German chef wife who created Hobbs Germany. Till then, we are delighted that EuroLuxHome.com is a distributor for Hobbs Germany in the United States.

I fall in love with all the antique and vintage furniture that Greg and I select for EuroLuxAntiques.com. We carefully choose these beautiful pieces from France and elsewhere in Europe, and then (even more carefully!) bring them back to America to share with our customers. Sometimes I want to keep every piece of vintage furniture for myself! Of course I can't, because when we finally finish the renovation of our 1920s bungalow it will be packed to the rafters with me, Greg, and our eight dog and cat pals, as well as our own antiques.

Mid-Century Modern sideboard is a very pretty example of the kind of vintage furniture I loveThis French Mid-Century Modern sideboard is a very pretty example of the kind of vintage furniture I enjoy. It especially tempted me to tell the family to squeeze up a bit tighter so we could fit it in! But I'm so glad it went to such a lovely home, and I'm delighted that our customer Irene in Fulton, Maryland, let us show you these pictures of her dining room.

Vintage Sideboard in its new Maryland home! EuroLuxAntiques.comIrene has done a lovely job with her elegant blue dining room. The Art Deco chandelier is a great match to the sideboard against the far wall. The gold-framed mirror on the left wall will be hung above the sideboard, but Irene sensibly decided she need to see the sideboard in place first, before positioning the mirror.

Vintage French buffet sunburst design and basketweave. EuroLuxAntiques.com

The sideboard or buffet dates to 1960 and it features a fantastic walnut veneer and handsome hardware. It's clear that a master craftsman put a lot of love - and probably a lot of hours - into creating that stunning sunburst design. Then you've got that sensational basketweave on the top and side doors too.

The doors open to reveal this very practical and attractive storage space. The superb banded marquetry on the shelves and interior drawers add plenty of decorative detail.

Vintage French sideboard in dining room. EuroLuxAntiques.comHere's another shot of Irene's dining room, with a closer focus on the vintage French buffet. The symmetry of the decor is very pleasing to the eye. The dark blue walls are exceptionally striking and noble, and Irene adds a little lift and lightness with that lovely touch of white along the lower wall panel. This is a really unique and stylish dining room and I wish we could all gather around the table for a celebration feast!

If you have a room with vintage furniture, we'd love to see your photos. Send us an email here. Meanwhile thanks to Irene for offering such great inspiration!

Baby Bella makes...eight! Our clients Bruce and Julie pose in front of their new antique French Brittany buffet with Bruce Junior and Bella Lynn.

When we last visited Bruce and Julie of Whitmire, SC, they had just purchased an antique French Brittany armoire from us to use in their master bedroom. When we visited them again a couple of weeks ago to deliver their new antique Brittany buffet for the entryway, we discovered another new addition to the master bedroom: a crib for baby number eight! Little Bella Lynn joins seven siblings, all under age 14. Congratulations!

On this visit, I was struck by how Bruce and Julie have successfully incorporated antique furniture into their children's rooms. Many people don't think children and antique furniture can coexist peacefully, but Bruce and Julie prove that's not the case. Not only do their children live with antiques, they seem to love them. I especially got a chuckle out of seeing the Barbie dolls neatly lined up on the mantelpiece in one of the girls' rooms. Charming!

Bruce and Julie's home is blessed with a large entryway, and they'd been making routine trips to our bricks-and-mortar gallery in Newberry to find a suitably scaled antique French buffet to furnish the grand entry. Luckily we just received a new container from Europe, and we could hardly get this particular buffet off the ship fast enough! Bruce and Julie snapped it up, and as you can see it's the perfect fit for their decor.

Bruce is quite a woodworker, and I admired all the embellishments he's made to the original mantels throughout the house. I also love the way Bruce and Julie use chandeliers throughout their home (because, really, who can have too many crystal swags near the ceiling?!). Note how they scale the size of the chandelier to suit the room.

Great use of color in Bruce and Julie's dining room! Red can feel overwhelming, but the white fireplace, patterned upholstery, and glass decor balance the burgundy nicely.

We've been discussing the use of color all month, and Bruce and Julie's home makes a great study in how to use rich paint colors and colorful furnishings in a harmonious design that's not overpowering. I love the fact all the fireplace mantels are white, for example. This technique unifies the design throughout the house and helps balance the vivid wall color. In the dining room, red walls are balanced by patterned upholstery and glass accents. In the bedrooms, red furnishings contrast neutral wall colors. Well done!

We appreciate the repeat business from Bruce and Julie and wish them all the best with their new little one, Bella!

If you'd like to see your home featured in a client spotlight, email me photos! We love to show off our clients' great interior designs.
