Antique Beds: Styles and Tips

If you’re into old furniture, you know nothing makes a statement in your home quite like a quality antique bed. Something about the class and style of these pieces keeps designers coming back. Simply put, they don’t carve bed frames, headboards and footboards quite like they used to! In the age before machine carving, the quality of bedroom furniture was decided by the skill of the craftsman and the quality of materials. Each piece was crafted in its own unique way, without the standardized sizes and parts. What does that mean for furniture enthusiasts looking to add antique style to their bedroom? And how do you go about choosing the right antique bed for your home?

In this post, we’ll go over some of our favorite styles of 19th century and 20th century beds, as well as go over some of the ins-and-outs that will make your interior decorating life easier.

The Best Antique Beds

Whether you’re looking for a taste of the French countryside, or the prestige of a London palace, an antique bed is a great place to start.

Victorian

Named after Queen Victoria and the era of English prosperity she helped to usher in,  this style is sure to make you feel like royalty. Often crafted from solid woods such as antique oak, a Victorian style piece would be a great fit in your elegant bedroom set. This is a relatively popular style, so it won’t be too difficult to find other antique furniture to complement your bedroom’s centerpiece. Victorian beds always impress. Similar styles include the Regency style.

Louis XVI

The Louis XVI style, as you may be able to guess because of its name, is an antique French furniture movement. Characteristics of this style include taking a neoclassical approach, which means there are themes and motifs from ancient Greek architecture. Whether you choose a rosewood, oak, or mahogany bed in this style, we think you’ll be impressed.

What You Should Know About Antique Beds

Whether you choose an iron bed, 4-poster bed, canopy bed or brass bed, picking the right antique piece can be a journey. There are more elements to take into account than just looks. For example, since these pieces were crafted before standardized sizes, you may need to get a customized mattress to fit the bedframe. In the old days, there weren’t king size beds, queen size beds, full size beds or double beds- they were tailored to the requirements of the user. If you need a custom mattress designed for one of your bed frames, here is a good place to start. One thing is certain- whether you choose a Rococo, Louis XV, Mid-Century Modern, French Country, or Art Deco bed, you’ll be making a style statement in your antique bedroom or guest room. We wrote a post covering all of the staples of bedroom furniture. If you’re interested in learning more, you can check it out here.

At EuroLuxHome.com, we have a wide selection of antique bed frames and bedroom furniture. From sleigh beds to daybeds, our collection has something for everyone.

Picking the Perfect Bedroom Dresser

So you’re renovating your bedroom. You’ve picked out a new bed that fits your color scheme, arranged your curtains, and decided what to do with your wall space-what’s left? A bedroom dresser. Not only are dressers essential pieces of bedroom storage, providing plenty of room for clothes, but they’re a great way to bring your space together. In this post, we’ll talk about what to look for when picking yours out, and show a few pictures of some of our favorites. With so many wonderful options on today’s furniture market, it’s hard to keep track of them all! Whether you’re looking for a chest of drawers, solid wood headboard or other bedroom furniture, you’ve got options.

For a synopsis of bedroom decor in general, head on over to our post here.

Bedroom Dresser Styles

For those decorating their sleeping space, there are a wide variety of styles available to choose from. We’ve even seen customers decorate their entryways and living rooms with a quality 4-drawer dresser. Below are just a few of the many styles you could consider.

Victorian

Among our best sellers are Victorian style bedroom dressers and bedroom chests. These will bring a Dickens-ian type of luxury to any space. Many of these were crafted in the early 20th century, a contrast from more modern pieces. A quality antique dresser that has stood the test of time is a great way to spice up your home decor.

Victorian Inspired Dresser, Jonathan Charles

Mid-Century Modern

For something a little more recent, we’d recommend the Mid-Century Modern. Despite being a vintage movement, some pieces in this style look more futuristic than today’s furniture! You will be drawn to the sleek lines and smooth color schemes. Paired with the right end table or bed frame, a quality vintage dresser could bring your entire space together. Regardless of your preferred size and number of drawers, there is something in this style for everyone!

For more information on this movement, check out our post about it here!

Rustic

Rustic decor is a natural, old fashioned style that still brings much to the table! These bedroom dressers are a great fit for those with a log cabin, or those who want to create that effect! The warmth and sophistication of these pieces will be the first things you notice.

Where to Place Your Bedroom Dresser

Now that you’ve picked out your new favorite piece of furniture, it’s time to decide where to put it! Generally speaking, a good place to put your antique or modern dresser is to the side of your bed, against the wall. You don’t want it to be to close, as it will be hard to get out of bed! But you still want it to be within a few steps. After all, a big reason dressers are so useful is their accessibility! We’ve had customers that find them so useful, they put them in their home office!

Whether you choose a small dresser, 6-drawer dresser, 5-drawer chest or even an entire bedroom set, we hope this post has been useful to you in your journey of bedroom decor. If you’re in the market for a new piece, we’d be happy to help over at EuroLuxHome.com! You can check out or bedroom dressers on this page. Our new arrivals include other furniture such as bookcases, sectional sofas, dining room furniture and more!

Antique Buffet, Louis XVI style

When we delivered an antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet to our customers Mary and Phil, we had no idea what a great treat we were in for while touring their chateau-style home! Read on and see for yourself. Our sideboards are the perfect way to make a statement in any room. Whether you’re looking for a credenza for your living room, or a mid-century modern marble top antique sideboard for your dining room, EuroLuxHome.com has the antique furniture for you. From feet to cabinet doors, we make sure each piece of furniture meets high standards.

Home Decor boosted by an Antique Buffet

We met Phil and Mary in our antiques store in Newberry. They came to find a buffet to function as a dresser between two closets in their master bedroom. Mary explained they have been building their dream chateau over the past ten years. They are finally starting to pull it all together. They had very specific dimensions and wanted a beautiful antique buffet in a French Country style. After measuring and remeasuring, they decided on our  gorgeous walnut Louis XVI buffet. Phil said that Mary had her eye on a pair of Italian Blackamoor floor lamps too and he wanted us to deliver those as a birthday surprise for her.

An American French Chateau

When we arrived at their gorgeous home in Greenwood, SC, we certainly admired the gorgeous stone exterior. It looks much like a French chateau. The bottom first floor has been built into the hill beneath the home and this is the view from the back garden looking out over the lake. It is stunning! Unfortunately the fountains had already been turned off for the winter season, so we didn’t get photos. We’ll have to come make another delivery in the spring! Mary tells us she loves spending time puttering in the gardens she has built around the back side of the home. This place gave off a great late 19th century/early 20th century furniture vibe. We could tell they had a great eye- each piece of furniture they owned has high-quality, and showed elite craftsmanship. From entryway to dining room furniture, their interior design was fantastic.

Antique Buffets: Bringing the Room Together
Stone entryway

Phil greeted us at the huge solid wood door under a brick archway and showed off the huge iron bell on a rope that functions as a doorbell. It is also how he lets Mary know it is time to come in out of the garden!

Mary and Phil explained they had designed the entire home themselves based on places they had seen in France and have done much of the work themselves – including building the barrel arch supports on which the brick mason worked to create the amazing arched entry hall!

Venetian Blackamoors

Phil thought the hand-carved and painted Venetian Blackamoors that he bought in our store would grace the entry way to the castle with their candelabra. (We still have a similar lamp number P-49 available.) Phil surprised Mary with the lamps as a gift, and they do help light up the entrance to the keep! However, on a second delivery to bring a vintage Renaissance style console table for the entry way, we found Mary had moved the Blackamoor lamps to either side of the grand stone fireplace. I didn’t actually capture the entire fireplace because it is so tall!

Blackamoor lamps

And here is the antique French Country Louis XVI buffet that the couple chose for their master bedroom. It fits perfectly between the two closets… just as they planned! antique French Country Louis XVI Buffet The walnut French Country style antique buffet has lovely carvings on the door fronts and pretty shaping around the upper glass door. The mirror set in the back of the buffet gives a nice sense of light and reflection. This is a great choice of buffet to repurpose as a dresser in the bedroom!

A sight to behold!

After we had delivered the Venetian lamps and the antique French Country Louis XVI buffet, Mary and Phil came back to our antiques store to choose some other furniture. Check out my next blog post titled Client Spotlight: Vintage Renaissance Console Table to see more photos of the house from that second delivery. Meanwhile, we hope you agree with us that this couple has a truly beautiful home! Whether you’re looking for a Victorian vintage buffet, an antique oak or mahogany sideboard, a wood buffet with a hutch or dining table, EuroLuxHome.com has you covered.

Antique Buffets in Today’s Homes

Antique French Brittany Buffet with Jadeite Fire King

Antique buffets are increasingly popular for today’s homes, bought by people who want a unique and very useful piece of storage furniture. In addition to providing versatile storage and serving space, the antique buffets in our online store are beautifully handcrafted. They often feature ornate hand-carvings and elegant glass doors. We find our buffets in Europe — most of them are French — and hand-pick the best to ship them back to the USA. Our customers can’t get enough of these fabulous pieces! Whether it’s a wood buffet with hutch for your living room, or a French Country buffet server for your dining room, we’ve got the stylish furniture to meet your needs. Here are some photos of antique buffets making a great impression in our customers’ homes.

Antique French Brittany Buffet with Jadeite Fire King

Debbie and Drew bought this antique French Brittany buffet from us and discovered it was the perfect choice for their kitchen. It was just the right size to fit with the lower ceilings in their space. Debbie found in our store a very beautiful antique Brittany buffet that is on the petite side. It fit exactly where she needed the buffet in her kitchen. As you can see, it was the ideal piece to display her Jadeite Fire King collection. This collection was made by Anchor Hocking in the 1940s.

Antique Renaissance Buffet Kitchen Diner

A French Buffet

Natalya in California bought this antique French buffet from us for her kitchen. Elaborate walnut carvings make a wonderful decorative statement in her kitchen.  The buffet dates to 1900 and as Natalya has three lively young sons running around, a big sturdy buffet like this is perfect for the kitchen. The storage space in the large buffet makes it as practical for Natalya’s family as it is beautiful.

repurposed Antique French Brittany Buffet

This is an antique French Brittany buffet that we delivered to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, Florida. May wanted us to give it an update and alter it to accommodate a TV. So we asked a local restoration company to remove the central support between the left and center upper doors, and attach it to the end of the left door. They did a wonderful job and it is now a gorgeous TV cabinet for May. The front of the cabinet is hand-carved in traditional Brittany style. Notice the scenes of rural life and figures of a man and woman acting as support columns.

antique French Louis XV Buffet

A Piece of Dining Room Decor

Many of our customers buy an antique buffet from us for their dining rooms. This is the perfect place for it as it stores all your serving dishes, stemware and silverware. It also provides extra serving space when you are entertaining. For example, Paul and Lane selected this antique Louis XV Buffet from Liege, Belgium, from us for their handsome dining room.

antique French dining chairs Renaissance

Lenore and John bought this super antique French Henry II buffet in the Hunting style from us for their recently purchased cottage in North Carolina. The cottage is more than 100 years old so it makes sense to furnish it with antiques too! A carved scene of a hunter and stag on the upper cabinet makes this buffet a work of art. The two lower cabinet doors are carved with mythical, dragon-like creatures. These add yet more character to this charming cottage. The vintage French chairs are also from our store.

Then Lenore found another buffet she loved. She decided to get creative with it for her bedroom! Louis XVI antique sideboard bedroom

The pretty Louis XVI buffet is carved in oak wood with delightful ribbons, floral designs and coats of arms. Crafted in France in 1930, the buffet also features mirrored doors and open display shelves that made it the perfect choice to be repurposed as a bedroom dresser.  There is so much space to tuck away your jewels and silk scarves and other favorite pieces of clothing!

Antique Buffets Galore!

We’ve got all sorts of buffets for your selection. Perhaps a marble top credenza or sideboard tickles your fancy. Maybe an antique oak, Art Deco buffet cabinet is the style you need. Antique Chinese Wedding Bed

Antique Chinese Wedding Bed

We imported this exquisite antique Chinese wedding bed to the USA in 2012…. it had previously inhabited a home schedule for demolition so it was wonderful to have the chance to give the Chinese wedding bed a new life! It was finally purchased by our customer Dongming in Greenville, SC, so it has landed in a place very different to its origins in the Zhejiang Province in Eastern China! A full size antique bed of this caliber, like much the antique furniture we carry, is a sight to behold. From headboard to footboard, its solid wood crafting combined with a quality comforter means its owner will be sleeping in comfort and style.

Antique Chinese Wedding Bed

Dongming and his daughter had driven to Columbia for the day and were on their way home to Greenville. His daughter decided she really wanted to eat at Arby’s. They got off I-26 at Newberry, and ended up on Main Street. Dongming decided he wanted to stop in some antiques shops, which is how he made his way to our EuroLux Home antiques store. He is a professor of Asian Studies, specializing in Chinese literature, so when he saw the antique Chinese wedding bed in our Gallery, he stopped in his tracks! He knew exactly what it was and also knew it would fit in his master bedroom. To top it all off, it was his birthday! He took it as a sign of fate.

antique Chinese wedding bed

Antique Bed Crafted Perfectly

The Late Qing Dynasty antique Chinese wedding bed in red lacquered pine dates to around 1900. It is very ornamental and ornate. Antique Chinese wedding beds like this were once used by royalty, and were often called “Eight Step Beds.”  It is divided into two areas, one for sleeping and the other for storage. A Chinese wedding antique bed frame was actually used like an entire bedroom. Chinese women spent most of their time eating, embroidering, socializing, and sleeping in this area. It was basically a bedroom set in one piece of bedroom furniture! An entire antique bedroom, merged into one piece. Truly remarkable.

Greg and I were out of town at the furniture market in North Carolina when Dongming purchased the bed. We already had deliveries scheduled for the following week in Georgia. However, Dongming was leaving to take a group of students on a study abroad tour in China for the summer and he really wanted to have the bed delivered prior to his departure.

antique Chinese wedding bed in partsI stayed up until 4 am the night before the delivery in order to get all 50 pieces of the bed cleaned, waxed, and ready to be delivered, but I made it happen!

The bed comes apart in about 50 pieces. It is completely held together with tenon and mortise joints – no hardware at all! This is a photo of about half of the bed pieces.

It took about two hours to reassemble it in Dongming’s home, but it looks great! The bed features various carvings of people and traditional Chinese symbols. Notice it is gilded with a very fine layer of gold.

Qing Dynasty Luxury

Dongming is planning to use the Late Qing Dynasty bed on a daily basis. This very beautiful bed will continue to be loved and cherished. We’re so glad the superb antique Chinese wedding bed was saved and it found a new home!

King Henry Bed Bench

King Henry Bed Bench BG-362

A bed bench at the end of the bed is one of the hardworking unsung heros of the bedroom. Today we are going to celebrate the bed bench by showing photos of a fabulous King Henry bed bench in our customer’s bedroom.

King Henry Bed Bench BG-362Anne F. in Texas bought this handsome new King Henry style end of the bed bench from us. The antique-inspired bench is beautifully crafted with a solid wood construction that has a rustic pecan finish. (This bench is also available with an antiqued white finish.) The eye is drawn down to the gorgeous curvy stretchers crowned with bold finials. Reeded detail on the stretchers add another touch of elegance.  Here’s how it looks in Anne’s bedroom:

King Henry Bench for Bedroom

“It’s perfect! Just beautiful,” said Anne in her email to us, and we agree! It works perfectly in Anne’s pretty bedroom and it’s a great match for the bed. The neutral fabric upholstery on the seat is tufted to enhance the traditional appeal and bring yet more comfort and luxury into the bedroom. Everyone thinks about armoires, dressing tables, chests of drawers and of course beds as the stars of the bedroom, but a bed bench is not only highly useful, it often adds the icing on the cake by making the room look more finished.

King Henry Bed Bench

When you add a bed bench to your bedroom, you’ll soon be wondering how you ever lived without it! It’s the perfect place to sit down and put on your socks or shoes, or perhaps pause a while to take a phone call without messing up your tidily made bed!

When choosing a bed bench, you want to pick one that is slightly narrower than your bed, as Anne has done, and as a rule of thumb you probably want a bench that is slightly lower than the bed too.

Thank you Anne for sending the photographs. We are so delighted to see how fabulous the bed bench looks in your home. Those curvy stretchers really do add a very refined decorative touch!

Why Bed Benches?

A quality bedroom bench is an incredibly versatile piece of furniture. Whether you’re looking for something to add comfort, such as an upholstered bench, or something practical such as a storage bench, this furniture type can meet any needs. Some of them are so pretty you’ll want to put one in your living room, or in your hall as an entryway bench! The materials often used for these pieces are incredible. Things like acrylics, dark brown oak, birch wood and genuine leather are all common choices for material. You could also get something with faux leather or linen upholstery. Others feature a metal frame, crafted from metals such as stainless steel. Of course, you could also get a regular wood bench too!

Putting a quality upholstered storage bench or accent bench at the foot of your bed is a great way to overhaul your interior design. On top of that, it provides functionality to make your life easier via storage space! From nailhead trim to tufting, from Mid-Century Modern styling to Victorian glam, you’ll find that they’re built to impress.

Louis XV Vanity Chest of Drawers

Vintage Louis XV Vanity Chest

Vintage Louis XV Vanity ChestInterior designer Debbie at DMS Interiors in Sarasota, FL, found our Houzz.com listing for this pretty vintage Louis XV marble-top vanity chest of drawers with mirror.

Debbie thought it was the perfect fit for her client’s project in Sarasota. The family wanted to change one of their guest rooms to have a bit more of a feminine aesthetic for a new guest, a close friend of the daughter.

Rococo Style Chest of Drawers

The 1930 vintage French Rococo mahogany chest of drawers with its beautiful white marble top, charming ornate metal handles, curvy shaping and scrolled feet was a wonderful touch for the room!

As the daughter’s friend was arriving the following week, Debbie wanted to know if we could expedite the shipping rather than take the normal three or four week time frame for white glove delivery. We always try to do everything we can for our customers so we decided to make it happen! Customer home in FloridaDelivering antique furniture We left early in the morning and made it to the family’s address in Sarasota just before 7 pm. The client’s home has a gorgeous view of the water and quite a wonderful pool too. The guest bedroom is upstairs to the right, overlooking the pool. However, the flight of 20 steps was a bit of work with such a heavy vintage vanity chest of drawers!

Luckily the marble and mirror come off the chest for safe transport. Greg and I took out the drawers too to make it a bit more manageable for me. I may only be 5 foot 2 inches, but I can carry furniture when I need to!

Vintage Louis XV chest

Solid Furniture

We hefted it up the stairs and put it in place, where it will enjoy a beautiful view for years to come. This is such a delightful room and the Louis XV vanity chest of drawers looks terrific. This is the view from the house:

Since we were in Florida, Greg and I decided to visit Disney’s Magic Kingdom in Orlando before heading home. Greg went with family when he was two years old, so he didn’t remember much. I grew up in Florida and have been many times, but a day at Disney is always fun. We hit all the highlights – Thunder Mountain, Space Mountain, Pirates of the Caribbean, Haunted Mansion (Greg’s favorite), Jungle Cruise and my favorite, the Enchanted Tiki Room.

Disney's Magic Kingdom in Orlando

Much has changed in Fantasy Land since I was there last year, and the changes were interesting to see. My secret tip if you happen to be traveling to Disney, is to stop in Gatson’s Tavern in Fantasy Land. They have created a very delicious apple cider slush drink called LeFou’s Brew that is not to be missed on a hot Florida day!

Chest of Drawers Styles

There are many different styles of drawer dresser to choose from. From Georgian to Victorian, Art Deco to Chippendale, you’ll be impressed by the function and beauty of the piece. Other styles include Regency, French Country, Serpentine, George III, Mid-Century Modern and Louis XV style.  A solid wood crafted piece of furniture(an oak chest, for example) is a great way to complement your existing furniture, such as your sideboards or even living room furniture. Design choices such as bow fronts, lacquers and inlays add an extra splash of style.

South Carolina Historic Home Picture

Our series of client spotlight blog posts shows how our antique furniture and lighting look in our customers’ homes.  These are some of our most popular blog posts among people who read our antiques blog! Anyone who is interested in home decor enjoys a sneak peek inside someone else’s house. It’s also a good way to see how other people live with antiques and incorporate them into today’s homes. Plus, thanks to the kindness of our customers, we get a mini tour of some mighty fine homes!

Here is a roundup of our antique furniture customer spotlights for the last six months, in case you missed seeing them. Click the links to read the full story and see more photos.

South Carolina Historic Home PictureThis is an example of one of those mighty fine homes I was telling you about! We delivered a handsome antique French Renaissance buffet to the this gorgeous historic home built in 1810 in Winnsboro, SC.  Read the antique Renaissance buffet blog post to see photographs of the interior including our intricately carved antique buffet in the charming dining room and several of our vintage chandeliers hanging in other rooms.

French Antique Brittany Bed

Greg and I personally delivered a stunning French antique Brittany bed and a Brittany buffet to our customer May in Pensacola Beach, FL. May retired here but she used to travel a lot to Europe and she loves Paris, so she especially enjoys buying antique French furniture. May bought an 1880 chestnut wood French Brittany antique bed, heavily carved with scenes of villagers and windmills. She also bought a Brittany style buffet dating to the same year, and asked us if we could alter the buffet to fit a TV for her bedroom. We could and we did! See more photos of the converted buffet and of May’s 14th floor apartment with its lovely views in the Antique Brittany Buffet and Bed blog post.

Vintage French Rococo Dining ChairsFran P. in Concord, NC, bought this beautiful set of vintage French Rococo dining chairs for her dining room. The six mahogany vintage French dining chairs date to 1950 and the chairs feature curvy lines from the cabriole legs to the carved curlicues.

The soft pinky beige fabric upholstery is also pretty in Fran’s dining room. It blends very well with the colors in her rug and the gilded Rococo mirror,

Antique French Provincial Armoire repurposedWe delivered a handsome antique French Provincial armoire to our customers Paul and Lane near Clemson, SC.  for them to repurpose into a unique gun cabinet!

The armoire is carved in the Normandy style, dating to 1890, with a large carved vase of flowers on the top and many carvings of birds.

Paul is going to convert the armoire himself. Lane is pleased to have a terrific full-length mirror in the master bedroom and she likes the fact that the mirrored doors will hide the gun collection.

See our blog post Antique Armoire Repurposed as a Gun Cabinet for more pictures including the antique Louis XV Buffet the couple bought from us for their dining room and another example of how a bookcase was repurposed as a gun cabinet!
