Transitional Furniture: The Best of Both Worlds

One of the most popular and versatile interior decor styles, the Transitional style is elegant and harmonious, drawing on the best of both traditional decor and contemporary looks. This school of design offers both the warmth and classic appeal of traditional homes, but updates the look with contemporary clean lines. Transitional furniture can be a great fit in your contemporary style living room. This style features clean lines that are sure to enhance your home decor. Transitional spaces are a sight to behold, so consider adding one to your interior design. Just imagine how lovely your transitional living room will look with some of these transitional design pieces.

Alden Parkes Transitional Dining ChairStreamlined silhouettes and gentle curves create a sophisticated atmosphere. They strike a nice balance between casual and formal, masculine and feminine. That’s why this style is so popular among interior designers. Traditional design room ideas are almost limitless, making it one of the most versatile stylings. Quality craftsmanship and straight lines makes this decorating style  sleek and attractive.

Transitional Chairs, Tables, and More

Furniture such as chairs, tables and sideboards will feel familiar and comfortable. The profile, finishes and upholstery will be pared down to give that contemporary edge. This design style is the perfect blend of old and new, which is why we love the contemporary design of transitional decorating.

The furniture will create interest through the use of high-quality materials and crisp and strong design, like this Alden Parkes dining chair in our online store and the San Maria gray Transitional console below.

San Maria Console Transitional
There are no fancy curlicues and frilly or ornate carvings and embellishments in the Transitional style!

The color palette tends to be neutral, including cream, taupes and browns, gray, and grayed out greens and blues. Monochromatic color schemes are tonally layered to create interest without visual clutter.

Jonathan Charles Wine TableThe understated effect might be given a hint of color with a few artworks or accessories, such as a bold jewel color or a tangy citrus tone or a pretty pastel on a throw pillow, lamps, or vase. But this is kept to the minimum rather than having many pops of color punctuating the space.

This bold red Jonathan Charles wine table is a perfect example of Transitional style.

Furniture Classics Bar StoolTextiles and upholstery are usually a solid color or very subtle design, rather than a big or fussy pattern. The design interest comes from textures!

Transitional Furniture: A Modern Blend

Fabrics for upholstery and soft furnishings often combine textures including natural fabrics, slubbed linens and coarse weaves, and the mixture of matte and shiny surfaces. In this way, though the neutral colors might be the same, the effect is layered. This creates a lot of depth and an inviting mood.

This Furniture Classics bar stool with a chocolate brown weave is a perfect example of the textured neutral look.

Displays of ornaments and artwork treasures are usually fairly restrained, with a well-edited display of a few pieces that serve as focal points, rather than the more traditional approach of displaying a lot of pieces across many surfaces.

Strong, simple and serene are the watchwords for this light and easy Transitional decor style. We have many beautiful pieces of high-quality Transitional style furniture and home accessories in our online store, so browse around and get inspired!

French Country Stools

Carved French Country Stool

We were really pleased to see how beautifully a French Country stool blended into our client’s kitchen. Stephanie C. already had two French Country style stools in her kitchen in Kernersville, NC.

Carved French Country Stool The two French Country stools featured a black wash finish and Stephanie needed a third one to match. This is the new counter-height stool that Stephanie chose from our selection of French Country stools at EuroLuxHome.com. Intricate floral and foliage wood carvings across the curvy chair rail and seat apron create a stunning decorative effect. The nice cabriole legs are typical of French Country style, and this stool also boasts a hand-woven rattan or rush seat. The antiqued black washed stain adds the finishing touch!

Below is the French Country stool in Stephanie’s kitchen, along with her two existing stools. Thanks Stephanie for sending the photo. I am just drooling over that kitchen – it is gorgeous!

French Country Stool in the kitchen

French country stools at kitchen islandEvery detail from the kitchen cabinets to the handsome chandelier is exquisitely chosen. It all adds up to a wonderful example of the traditional French Country look. I like the bright touches of sunny Mediterranean color too, in the mixer on the side counter, the yellow flowers, and the large pitcher above the fridge. The pretty carved shape of the back of the French Country stools makes a very inviting silhouette.

Stephanie said “It is beautiful and a perfect match to my other two! Thanks for the great service!” You can see more detail (left) of the hand-woven rattan seats which give a nice and casual country feel. I’m guessing that Stephanie likes the black wash finish on the stools to match that elegant island counter.

French country stool carved detailThis close-up shows the intricate carving on the stool apron. This is actually the same French Country stool, but with a natural dark wood finish rather than the antiqued black washed stain. Still, you get some idea of the ornately decorative effect.

The company that makes these stools specializes in high-quality Old World furniture designs created with traditional furniture techniques, like detailed carving, banded inlays and dovetail construction on drawers. So it’s not surprising that the French Country stool looks so lovely and authentic. Thanks Stephanie for sharing the photos of your to-die-for kitchen!

Celebrating Beaujolais Nouveau Day!

Beaujolais Nouveau Day

Beaujolais Nouveau Day is around the corner, on November 21, 2013. That’s the day that this year’s Beaujolais Nouveau wines are released and festivals and events take place across Europe and in U.S. cities from Boston to Seattle.

Beaujolais Nouveau Day The French are protective about their wine. In fact, it’s written into French law that each year’s Beaujolais Nouveau cannot be released until exactly 12:01 am on the third Thursday of November!

The event is marked in France by fireworks and celebrations. For decades, vintners have raced to be the first to get their Beaujolais Nouveau wines on the tables of restaurants in Paris. Later, the race extended across the channel to London. Now it seems like it’s one big world-wide sprint to get the bottles out to all corners, so wine revelers can cheer: “Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arrivé!”

Beaujolais Nouveau Day Poster
The timing is great for American Thanksgiving Day, as Beaujolais Nouveau is said to pair well with turkey. Hats off to the French for their canny marketing techniques! A century ago, the wine, made of hand-picked Gamay grapes, was just a humble table wine made by Beaujolais locals for their own enjoyment, to celebrate the end of the harvest. Now it’s an international star. The young wine is generally best enjoyed by the May of the following year.

Whether you like Beaujolais Nouveau or prefer a more mature wine, we think any excuse for a celebration is good enough. So you can always get in the spirit by raising a glass of your favorite Napa Valley red in honor of Beaujolais Nouveau Day!

Woodbridge Bar StoolWhile we’re talking about wine, I had to share a photo of this new wine glass bar stool that is in our gallery, because the cut-out design on the back is so charming and clever. It’s perfect for a wine celebration or for a wine-lover’s home! Crafted by Woodbridge Furniture Company, the solid wood bar stool has a hand-rubbed and waxed distressed finish, so it looks like it could have come from an old Parisian bistro or wine bar. (We have this design in a counter-height stool too.)

Although I appreciate wine, I doubt that Beaujolais Nouveau will be on our Thanksgiving table. Greg and I will be enjoying Uncle Dick’s Famous Bloody Mary recipe, as you can see in my earlier post!

Ambella Home Enoteca Wine CabinetBut I know that many of our customers are real wine connoisseurs. I would love to have a large enough wine collection to take advantage of this incredible new Ambella Home Enoteca bar cabinet. (We recently added the Ambella Home Collection line of furniture to our gallery, as the quality, design, and craftsmanship meet our high standards!) The 8-foot-tall bar features tons of wine cradles, storage cabinets, and racks to hang stemware.

French Wine Server

I think this new, reproduction French server/sideboard with a built-in wine rack is more my size! With the whitewash finish on the wood and a lovely limestone tile top, the server looks as if it would be quite at home in a French farmhouse in wine country.

All this talk of wine has made me thirsty! A votre santé! If you celebrate Beaujolais Nouveau Day, we’d love to hear how you do it. Tell us in the comments box below.

Windsor Counter Stools

Windsor counter stool in antique style with a modern swivel seat

Wendy C. in California told us how she came to buy the Windsor counter stools we shipped to her recently. She is a very smart shopper! Wendy did what we keep hearing so many retailers lament about. She “showroomed” or shopped on her smartphone while browsing for Windsor counter stools in a bricks and mortar store near her home in Trabuco Canyon.

Windsor counter stool in antique style with a modern swivel seatWendy found the same brand-new, high-quality counter stool in the Windsor style by Woodbridge Furniture Company on our website, but our price was better! She gave us a call and decided she was willing to wait for us to ship a pair of stools because of the savings. Remember: we offer free shipping on all items! Wendy also liked the idea of buying directly from a “mom and pop” store on Main Street. Even though we have a virtual gallery on the web, we are indeed a family-run business here at our Main Street store in Newberry, South Carolina. Without big city overheads, we can offer antique and high-quality reproduction furniture at a small-town price. That’s why Wendy found our Woodbridge Windsor counter stool was so much cheaper. We’re glad she found us too!

Counter Stools Done Right

Here is the pair of swivel seat Windsor counter stools in Wendy’s lovely kitchen. The stools match perfectly with her Windsor dining chairs. They look exceptional against the dark veining in the counter top. Although the stools look authentically antique, they’ve got built-in modern convenience as the carved saddle seat turns on a heavy-duty swivel mechanism. This stool is also available as a Windsor bar height stool.

Windsor counter stool in our client's California kitchenThe curve of the counter stool works beautifully with the curve of Wendy’s kitchen counter and the wood tone blends with the cabinets. The stools also accent the curvy silhouette of the white lidded bowl and the elegant light fixtures.  Windsor style chairs and stools originated in Great Britain, as you might guess. The basic spindle back design like wheel spokes was seen by the 16th century. However, a more sophisticated version became easier to craft during the 18th century, when steam was used to create the bow-back typical of the chairs. The earliest chairs made in this way came from the small town of Windsor, in Berkshire, England. (Windsor is also quite well-known for its castle!) The name stuck.
Thanks to Wendy for letting us take a peek inside her kitchen – it’s a beauty!

The New York Reproduction Barstool With a Story

Reproduction Barstool from EuroLuxAntiques.com

Although EuroLuxAntiques.com is best-known for its beautiful antique furniture from France and other parts of Europe, did you know that Greg and I also personally select high-quality reproduction pieces for our gallery? We pick out our favorite lighting, furniture, and other home accents, and yes, sometimes even a fantastic reproduction barstool!

A barstool should always have a tale to tell, so we were very pleased to learn the story from our client Margaret behind this superbly crafted barstool. It has quite a history for a newly-made reproduction!

Reproduction Barstool from EuroLuxAntiques.comMargaret, a board member and resident of a high-rise building in New York City, has been searching for nearly two years for just the right barstool for their doorman to use in the lobby of this building. Apparently the discerning board members just couldn’t agree on the right stool until Margaret found our website. Then she discovered our large selection of high-quality reproduction barstools.

Margaret chose an armless swivel seat barstool in a waxed cherry finish with black leather upholstery and brass nailhead trim. With a bowtie backsplat and hand-rubbed distressing for an antique look, the stool has just the right timeless appeal to suit this classic lobby.

Reproduction barstool from EuroLuxAntiques.com in the lobby of an NYC buildingIt has turned out to be a wonderful fit with the custom-designed desk of oak and marble with brushed brass, and it perfectly matches the lobby fixtures. After such a long wait, Margaret remained patient as we sorted out a shipping delay with the Greyhound courier service, but in the end, she was very happy.

She wrote, “I am delighted, and the member of the board who volunteered to help ratchet up the pressure and get this through, came sailing down to the lobby in his bare feet and hopped right on the stool, grinning from ear to ear. The barstool is really classy and is six steps up from all of the other stools we had considered over the years. Thank you, Aimee!”

Well, thank YOU Margaret! We’re delighted to know that the barstool, crafted by Woodbridge Furniture Company, is gracing the lobby of your lovely building in NYC. We hope your doorman enjoys it too  – comfort is important in that job!
