French Country Jam Cabinet

Melinda H. found us on Ebay and fell in love with our prettily carved small French Country cabinet. When we found out she had a home in Black Mountain, just outside of Asheville, NC, we jumped at the chance to deliver in person. We love that area and we discovered that Melinda’s house is amazing.

French Country Jam CabinetThis is the antique-inspired new French Country Cabinet that Melinda chose. It is crafted in solid oak wood with an antiqued finish.

It’s really a jam cabinet or jelly cabinet of the type that was popular in early 19th century American homes.

The French Country style cabinet (item BG-177 on our site) features detailed carving including a carved basket filled with flowers and tied with ribbon. The scalloped detail and curvy little legs add to the French Country style of the jam cabinet. It’s 39 inches high, so it’s a nice size for many rooms and many purposes.

French Country Jam Cabinet in the Kitchen

The French Country cabinet found its new home at the edge of Melinda’s kitchen, just under the clock. Melinda and her husband Richard have built a very beautiful home with incredible long-range views – it is no wonder they were featured in a magazine!

Breakfast nook with French Country jam cabinet

Here’s a closer look at the French Country jam cabinet on the left. The breakfast nook enjoyed stunning views. It was hard to take good photos with so much light streaming in through the windows, but at least you get an idea. The chandelier is also the perfect accent.

Living AreaMelinda graciously indulged our fascination with home design and showed us around, even showing us the upstairs loft where she and Richard indulge their passion – playing Celtic music together.

View from Loft

What a great view from the loft! The space manages to be both cozy and panoramic.

Custom Stained Glass Window BathroomI absolutely loved the custom-made stained glass panel featured above the large soaking tub in the master bathroom.

Custom stained glass panelThe detail on the stained glass panel is exquisite, and the green colors so vibrant.

Black Mountain PorchWe’re envious of the view that Melinda and Richard’s little dog sees from the back porch. What a lucky dog!

We love the Asheville area, as regular readers know from our stories about antiquing in Asheville. We even have our own booth now at the Antique Tobacco Barn. So it was terrific to have a chance to deliver to Melinda’s house ourselves. Greg and I found Black Mountain so charming that we went back for a few days of vacation. Thanks Melinda for sharing photos of your lovely home – we hope you enjoy the French Country cabinet for many years to come!

Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

I’ve often admired the Ambella Home Aspen sideboard that we sell, because it’s so handsome and chunky and rugged. It’s a James Bond of a sideboard! So I was delighted when our customer Amy B. in Wichita, KS, got in touch to tell us about the Ambella Home Aspen sideboard that she bought from us earlier this year. Before I show you how amazing Amy made the sideboard look, let me tell you a bit about the sideboard itself.

This is the Ambella Home brochure photo of the sideboard, and I like it because it’s dressed with charming blue and white ceramics. (We are big fans of antique and vintage blue and white Delft ceramics in the gallery.)Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

The antique-inspired sideboard looks old but it’s newly crafted by Ambella Home artisans for the Aspen collection. When I think of the Rocky Mountain ski town of Aspen, Colorado, I also think of handsome and chunky and rugged. There’s just no getting away from it!

Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard Details

The Ambella Home Aspen sideboard is carved from solid hardwood with an oak veneer top. It has a rich mahogany finish that gives a lot of depth and visual interest and adds to the sense of substance.

You can see from this close-up that every detail is beautifully crafted. Ambella Home furniture-makers are very skilled at giving an aged finish to make the sideboard look like a genuine antique. They also fit the furniture with nice antique-look handles and hinges, and the sturdy nailheads stand out against the planked wood.

So now let’s see how the sideboard looks in Amy’s house. Amy bought the piece in January but she wanted to finish up accessorizing it and putting the final touches on her decor before she sent a photo to us. Ambella Home Aspen Sideboard

Wow! What a phenomenal job! I love how Amy tied the black wrought iron candle holders above the black TV screen with the table lamps, and even the black light switch! This is such a sensuous but sophisticated arrangement. It would create a wonderful focal point in an alcove or nook. And (if you take out the TV screen and electric lamps) I defy anyone to say this tableau couldn’t have appeared in an Old World house a few hundred years ago – especially a Spanish Mission style house. It’s just so evocative.  Thanks Amy for sharing your lovely photo!

Best of September 2014: Traditional Homes

Valentino At the Emporer's TableWe took a glimpse inside some incredible traditional homes on the Letters from Eurolux blog this month. Some of those were in our series of Client Spotlights showing the home decor of our customers, with their EuroLuxHome.com purchase in place.

Others were in our Bookshelf series about new books on home decorating, antiques,  entertaining, gardens, and vintage living! Let’s look back at some of our favorite blog posts in September.

Antique Renaissance Buffet Kitchen DinerWe loved taking a little tour of Natalya’s California kitchen with our antique Renaissance buffet. The French antique Henry II Renaissance style buffet dating to 1900 is beautifully carved in walnut and it looks spectacular in Natalya’s kitchen. She also gave us the background on the gorgeous stove, decorative inlay on the wall, and cooker hood. (You can see more antique buffets on our website if you like the look.)

King Malcolm IV Johnny Cash ancestorEver since the new Johnny Cash Boyhood Home museum in Dyess, Arkansas, bought an antique table from us, we’ve looked forward to the opening of the restored house. It happened last month and Rosanne Cash said it was “completely restored to a most meticulous and historic detail.” My blog post on the Johnny Cash Boyhood Home and his Royal Scottish Heritage shows photos of the house and table.

So who is this guy in the portrait? It’s the 12th century King Malcolm IV of Scotland. And what does he have to do with Johnny Cash? Read the blog post and find out!

painted checkerboard floor in a traditional home It’s hip to be square! That was my conclusion after writing about Checkerboard Painted Wood Floors.   The look works for lots of different room moods and color schemes, as you’ll see in the photos. Painted floors were also popular in traditional homes in America as far back as the late 1700s. You can use the tutorial in that post if you are feeling arty and you want to paint a checkerboard floor yourself.

French Country Cabinet with black wash finishSpeaking of arty, our customer Richard bought this classic French Country cabinet especially to go under a fabulous abstract painting in his dining room. The new cabinet with a black finish and a marquetry wood top is nicely distressed to give the appearance of age. You can see for yourself that the antique-inspired new French Country cabinet looks wonderful in Richard’s dining room.

Cat yoga! Finally, we never posted this photo of Squiggy doing yoga on the blog, but we did share it on our EuroLux Home Facebook page as one of our regular Furry Friday posts. I just can’t resist sharing it with you here too. Do you think that Squiggy is doing Upward Facing Cat pose?

I hope you enjoyed our short overview of our favorite ‘traditional homes’ moments this month. PLUS a kitty as a bonus!

Best of August 2014: Heirloom Furniture

We’re always talking about heirloom furniture on this blog. The antiques we sell are already heirlooms, and the high-quality and beautifully crafted new furniture is destined to become an heirloom one day! This month, as well as talking about heirloom furniture and home accessories, we tipped our hat to heirloom tomatoes too…

Jonathan Charles chairs at EuroLux HomeWe started the month proudly announcing that we have changed our name to EuroLux Home. This is because we are doing so much business these days with antique-inspired new furniture, so the broader name shows that we offer much more than just antiques now. At EuroLuxHome.com you’ll find a wide range of new, antique-inspired furniture and home accents. For example, collections by Jonathan Charles, exquisitely crafted using the same techniques as original antique English and French furniture. French Country Stool in the kitchen

You can see exactly what we mean about the high quality of our new, antique-inspired furniture in our French Country Stools Client Spotlight. Stephanie was looking for a counter-height French Country stool for her gorgeous kitchen, and she found just want she wanted in one of our French Country style stools with intricate carvings, a hand-woven rattan seat, and antiqued black washed stain. See the full story for more photos and close-up details.

Client's home: A Castle in CharlestonIn other client spotlight, we delivered antique furniture to Brittany and Greg who live in this amazing castle style home in Charleston, SC.  The couple wanted furniture with lions on it, so we knew that the Mechelen style of furniture would be a roaring success with them! (Flemish Mechelen furniture often boasts handsomely carved lion heads.) Sure enough, they chose an antique Mechelen stained glass buffet with lots of noble lions. They also picked a monumental 1880 antique Renaissance sideboard with massive lion’s paw feet.  See the photos of the lion furniture inside the house in the Castle in Charleston Client Spotlight.

Ambella Home Rockefeller fireplace screen with copper accentsI’m confident that the furniture and accessories I featured in my article Warm Up Your Decor With Copper Accents will become family heirlooms.

From vintage copper plates and coal scuttle planters, to new upcycled lamps and a stunning copper backsplash, copper always creates an inviting atmosphere and a warm  glow.  Check out the post for some surprising ways to enjoy versatile copper in your decor, whether your taste is traditional, modern, or exotic.

Caprese in a shot glassFinally, what about the heirloom tomato post I mentioned? I shared a little about the history of ‘love apples’ and also suggested a wonderfully refreshing and easy recipe for gazpacho. Let’s not forget my Uncle’s fantastic Bloody Mary recipe and a chic party treat of mini insalata caprese in a shot glass.

Thank you for reading our EuroLux Home blog. I’ll be back in September with lots more to say about antique decor, home furnishings, interior design inspirations and living the antiques and vintage lifestyle!  If there is a topic you would like me to write about – from a particular antique furniture style to home decor tips – just email me.
