Antique Chandeliers Archives - Letters from EuroLux

What to Look for in Vintage or Antique Chandeliers

At EuroLuxHome.com, we know that purchasing vintage or antique chandeliers is an investment, not just for your wallet, but for the decor of your home. After all, we’ve been selling them on our website for years. As furniture experts, we cannot emphasize enough the role that quality lighting plays in making your furniture shine. Quality light, particularly antique lighting, highlights details and enhances the color of your interior design, making it an essential piece for any space. But before you jump in and make a purchase, there’s a few things you should know.

What defines a chandelier?

Believe it or not, a chandelier can be a lot of things. It is a term used to refer to any hanging light with multiple bulbs, which leaves much room for the interpretation of the craftsmen who create them. The image that’s probably in your head is a sparkling, elegant crystal chandelier. This is the style that most of our chandeliers at EuroLuxHome.com fall under. However, it is by no means the only kind that exists. In fact, many of these light fixtures are made of metal such as brass, bronze, silver, and iron. Each style of ceiling fixture has its merits, and the best choice depends on the aesthetic of your home decor.

Why antique chandeliers, and not other styles of lighting?

There are 2 major benefits: elegance and versatility.

Chandeliers, and especially the styles that we carry at EuroLux, have a certain regal feel that can’t be matched by other fixtures. A luxurious antique chandelier is essentially a status symbol. Adding one to your space can bring a Hollywood mansion feeling to any home. For an extra sparkle, we’d recommend going with a piece with pendants (the individual lights)crafted from glass or crystal. These translucent materials reflect light and create a shimmering mirror effect in your space, something that cannot always be said about a standard light fixture.

With such a wide range of styles of chandelier in the world, you have options. This breadth of styles makes it more likely to find the right fit. If a metal finish fits your room best, a piece exists for you. If that’s not your style, many are decorated with paint, meaning that you are able to find a color scheme that fits with the wood furniture in your home.

What types of vintage or antique chandeliers are available?

As mentioned before, you’ve got options when it comes to vintage and antique chandeliers. If you’re looking for quality glass lighting, you can’t do much better than a Murano Chandelier. Murano is a special kind of Italian glass renowned for its quality and durability. This type of glass is essentially the peak of the craft. Murano pieces tend to be some of the more attention grabbing chandeliers. We’d recommend making one the focal point of a large room, such as a living room.

Murano Chandelier

For something a little more understated, we’d recommend going with an antique brass chandelier. You’ll still get the sparkle from crystal or glass pendants that look like crystal drops, but these pieces tend to be a little less aggressove. Pieces like this complement a room rather than dominate it. These are good for your dining room, and would make a statement suspended from the ceiling over your table, casting a regal light over dinner with guests.

There are also a variety of mid century, vintage styles available for both of these categories, such as bohemian chandeliers, if you’d like a slightly more modern vibe. We even offer ceiling fixtures with lights meant to imitate the glow of a candle.

We could write an entire book about the various types of antique chandeliers in the world. There are plenty of styles we didn’t cover available on our website here.

What are some quality chandelier brands?

Some of the most popular and tested brands include Elegant Lighting, Chelsea House, and Currey & Company. EuroLuxHome.com is proud to carry all of them. We’ve been in this business for a long time, so we know what quality lighting looks like. These brands fit the bill.

Nothing accentuates your antique furniture like a quality antique or vintage chandelier. EuroLuxHome.com has a wide variety of vintage or antique chandeliers available for purchase. Visit our chandelier page here, and feel free to reach out with any questions about our products, or antique chandeliers in general. We’d love to help you find your perfect chandelier.

Antiques Buying Trip Belgium: Vintage Chandeliers

The next stop on our antiques buying trip in Europe was Belgium, which Greg calls his second home. I already wrote about our travels around France as we hunted for antique treasures to ship home to the USA, and you can read our last French antiques-hunting blog post here. As we drove our rented van into Belgium, we guessed we’d have an interesting time ahead of us, and we did. Well, Greg and his muscles did…

Finding Belgian vintage chandeliers

We were very happy to find some treasure troves of antique and vintage chandeliers.  Soon the numbers mounted up….

Antique Chandleliers from Belgium

As Greg said (sang): “30 chandeliers on a pile in the van, 30 chandeliers on a pile, take one down and sell it online… 29 chandeliers on a pile in the van.”  By the time we finished buying vintage chandeliers in Belgium, we had 85 chandeliers in the back of the van!

antique Renaissance dining set

I also bought the largest blue Delft vase we’ve ever seen – 2 1/2 feet tall! And I love all the details in this amazing antique Renaissance dining set with a Gothic iron chandelier. We bought it all to ship back to the USA because we know our customers will love these pieces.

antique buffet carving

This is a close-up of one of the carvings on the enormous antique Renaissance buffet. You will notice how fine the detail is. You can almost see the movement in the gentleman’s tunic.

Gothic iron chandelier

The iron Gothic chandelier is also spectacular. The ironwork is superb, as you can see in the figure here in full armor…

Now Greg had an even bigger packing job on his hands, between all the chandeliers and furniture. Could he fit everything in the van?

Greg packing antique chandeliers

You bet he could! Greg has mad truck packing skills. I’d back him against anyone to get the largest quantity of fragile and beautiful antiques packed safely and tightly in the fastest time. Greg says that his superpower is probably from all the Tetris he played as a kid.

In our next adventure in Belgium, you can see some of the wonderful religious treasures that we found, which have a surprising story behind them! For more info on chandeliers, check out our guide here.

Chandelier Lighting for Every Room and Style

Chandelier lighting makes a wonderful design statement in any room. Some people think you have to have a formal dining room to show off a chandelier. (For example, see the dining rooms in our client spotlights on Gail’s French vintage Rococo chandelier or Gary’s Art Nouveau chandelier.) Others like to use chandelier lighting in an entry way or foyer. A little razzle dazzle creates a sparkling welcome!

But you can enjoy the beauty of a chandelier in any room from the bedroom to the powder room. The crystal swagged chandelier in this traditional kitchen adds a very individual touch, doesn’t it?

We stock a huge selection of chandelier lighting in our online gallery. The choices range from antique and vintage chandeliers to new chandeliers hand-crafted by artisans. Let’s have a look at some of the chandelier style options for every room and every taste.

Vintage chandelier lighting Do you prefer streamlined shapes rather than the more elaborate swoops, swags and flourishes of fancier Rococo styles? Then this 1950 vintage French chandelier shows you can have ornate style without the frou-frou details! The metal chandelier is crafted with a light golden finish. The 6 arms boast a graceful leaf motif. The body has an ornate embossed look too. It’s stately and elegant, and would look terrific in a living area or dining room, or even in a hallway. When hanging chandelier lighting in areas where people will walk beneath, be sure to leave at least 7 feet from the ground. If you have a tall visitor with a bouncy step, you don’t want them banging their head!

Vintage Capodimonte chandelier lighting

If bling is simply not your thing, a ceramic chandelier like this darling vintage Capodimonte one is a pretty choice for a Victorian home or cottage. Or even for a modern shabby romantic bedroom or dressing room! The Italian chandelier is a petite 20 inches wide and 17 inches tall so it will fit nicely into a smaller space. But even though it is petite, the yellow 1950 vintage Capodimonte chandelier is full of cheer, painted with flowery panels.

Dale Tiffany chandelier lighting Mission styleBelieve it or not, this Dale Tiffany Mission style chandelier is not actually an antique. It is crafted by Dale Tiffany artisans in hand-rolled art glass with a bronzed metal base. The size and heavy look make this light a good fit for a larger room. Think about a great room or a high-ceiling foyer where it will balance the room scale nicely.

Rustic carved chandelier lightingThis rustic hand-carved chandelier is also newly crafted. The style is so adaptable that we could see it in a Scandinavian design scheme or in the decor of someone with a taste for folk art. Picture it in a country cabin, a Farmhouse kitchen, a Boho chic boudoir… the possibilities are endless. Each of the 8 hand-carved scroll arms supports a narrow shelf with candle cups and electric candles. Charming!

If you hang this or any chandelier over a dining table, allow at least 30 to 33 inches clearance above the table top.

Upcycled vintage spoon chandelier Finally, those of you with eclectic taste (or a love for tea!) will enjoy this upcycled vintage spoon chandelier. It is hand-crafted by an artist using vintage silver plate spoons.  You can see how fabulous it looks in our customer spotlight about Barbara’s kitchen featuring a custom-made spoon chandelier.

Fun and unique, the upcycled lighting would look delightful in a breakfast nook or your cottage kitchen. I can also imagine it as an entertaining addition to a guest bedroom. It will bring a smile to any visitor’s face and make them feel quite special and welcome!

I hope this post has inspired you to think about chandelier lighting in a new light!  (Sorry, I couldn’t resist.)
So here’s the Chandelier Challenge – just for fun. Describe your room or show us a picture and we’ll suggest a chandelier to suit it!

Celebrity Antiques Lovers at the Oscars

With the Academy Awards coming up on March 2, I was curious to see which celebrity antiques lovers would be on the red carpet at this year’s Oscars. It turns out that quite a few famous names go hunting for antiques. That includes the stars of the movie Gravity, which is up for best picture award at the 2014 Oscars, as well as other honors.

Sandra Bullock, a best actress nominee for her role in Gravity, has been spotted shopping in antiques shops in Texas and California. (We haven’t seen her in our Newberry, South Carolina store yet – check out our EuroLuxAntiques.com website, Sandra!)

Celebrity antiques: Clooney dining roomHer co-star George Clooney, mixes antique furniture in with his very tasteful decor, including vintage chairs and lighting. He seems to have a taste for Mission style chandeliers. You can see a rather fine one just over his shoulder in the dining room of his Los Angeles home, above what looks like a Renaissance style table and chairs. (Get the full house tour in the CBS News Person-to-Person with George Clooney.)  We have a very similar large Mission style vintage chandelier in the gallery.

Celebrity antiques: George Clooney antique chandelierClooney’s Baja peninsula Mexican villa also has an antique wrought iron chandelier over the otherwise modern dining room table, as featured in Architectural Digest.
Among many reasons to admire George Clooney, I like that he adopted his dog Einstein from a shelter. (A portion of all our sales benefits the PETS Inc. no-kill animal shelter, so it’s great to see a movie star helping homeless pets too.) Clooney got the cocker spaniel to love him at first sight (or first sniff) by rubbing meatballs on his shoes. Way to a dog’s heart, huh?

Ellen degeneres homeEllen DeGeneres hosts this year’s Oscars, and this celebrity antiques collector is fond of mid-20th-century antique French furniture, according to an Elle Decor article and slideshow. Her Santa Monica ranch is scattered with antiques like these 19th-century Windsor chairs. The Jonathan Charles Windsor chair that we stock in gray would also look at home in Ellen’s Country decor.

Other celebrity antiques lovers at the 2014 Oscars include Sandra Bullock’s fellow best actress nominee Meryl Streep (August: Osage County). Ms. Streep is apparently a frequent buyer of fine European antiques. She’s welcome to drop in at our gallery too, although I’d probably be speechless if she did. Only one of those ladies can win an Oscar on Sunday, or maybe one of the other actresses will scoop them both, but at least they have a passion for antiques in common!

While talking Hollywood, we are proud to count a five-time Emmy Award winner amongst our customers. You can read about him in our client spotlight on his French antique chairs.

Lighten Up! Summer Solstice and Chandelier Lighting

At the summer solstice, we’re all enjoying the light for the longest day of the year! Different cultures and countries celebrate the solstice in different ways. In England, crowds gather to watch the sun rise over Stonehenge. In France, they light bonfires for Feux de la Saint-Jean celebrations. But whatever the party, it’s all about the light!

As we’ve just received our latest container with more than 150 vintage French chandeliers (enough to light up the Eiffel Tower!) we’re thinking how lucky we are that we can sparkle up even the darkest days with decorative  chandelier lighting.

I don’t recommend hanging any of our EuroLux Antiques vintage chandeliers outside for a long period of time, but this gorgeous array of chandelier lighting for a vintage-themed wedding took my breath away. (My post on vintage weddings gave more wedding decor and gift ideas.)

Greg hanging our latest vintage chandelier lighting from France. EuroLuxAntiques.comHere’s my hunky husband Greg hanging up chandeliers in the gallery. We always check the wiring on all our vintage lighting, and rewire any that are a little frayed or worn, before putting them out for sale. The new container from Europe kept him busy!

A stylish chandelier always adds character to a room, but people sometimes wonder about the best size to buy. They don’t want a chandelier that swamps the room, but a too small chandelier can look a bit lost in a space.

Summery Vintage French Chandelier Lighting
Pretty vintage 1950 French Chandelier – Very summery!

My advice is to take the size of your room, for example 15 feet by 21 feet, and add the two together. The sum here is 36. Translate that to inches (in this case 36 inches) and you’ve got a good guideline for the approximate diameter of chandelier to choose. If in doubt, veer towards a larger size chandelier. When suspending the chandelier lighting over a dining table, it usually looks best if the chandelier is 50% or more of the table width. Allow for it to hang with at least 30 to 33 inches clearance above the table top. See my other tips to light your home beautifully, with chandeliers, wall sconces, and pendant fixtures.

How are you celebrating the summer solstice? Tell us in the comments box below!

Antiques Buying Trip Day 6: Chandeliers!

If you’ve been following our Antiques Buying Trip video series, you’ll know that we’ve been on the hunt for interesting and unusual vintage lighting.  On the 6th day of the trip, we find vintage chandeliers aplenty!  Some of the warehouses we visit are so full of antiques and vintage pieces that we literally have to crawl our way through like a rat in a maze, and this is one of them.  This particular antiques dealer in Belgium clears houses when someone dies and the family doesn’t want or need their possessions, so we never know what we’ll find there.

By the end of our Antiques Buying Trip in Europe, we found 135 wonderful antique and vintage chandeliers!  It will take us some time to get them all checked out to make sure they are working properly, photograph them, and then upload them to our website.  In the meantime, check out our collection of vintage chandeliers
