Red Wine Colored Decor

Just as red wine is smooth on the palate, red wine decor is smooth on the interior design palette! I'm writing this post on Beaujolais Nouveau Day and if you don't know about this annual celebration of wine you can read all about it in my Beaujolais Nouveau Day blog post from last year.

I could sure do with a glass of Beaujolais Nouveau as we just moved into our renovated vintage 1920s bungalow and there is still so much to do! But in the meanwhile, I've been thinking about red wine colored decor.Traditional Living Room by New York Interior Designers & Decorators Scott Sanders LLC

Wine colored decor is especially great in winter. It's cozy, warming, welcoming, sophisticated, and dramatic. Wine colors vary from tawny tones with more of a rusty red hue (like aged Merlot) through to plummy purplish tones like spicy Syrah, French Bordeaux, and California's Cabernet Sauvignon.

All of these wine colors look beautiful with wood, which is why they look great in traditional homes decorated with antique furniture. This photo comes from a Client Spotlight on Antique Hunting Chairs that our customer Howard bought from us.  Howard's dining room in his New York home is decorated with wine colors. As you can see, the wine tone looks splendid with the aged wood of the 130-year-old oak chairs and that substantial wood table.

Wine colored decor is always a good choice for a dining room. As I've said in other posts about red dining rooms, any shade of the color red helps stimulate appetite and lively conversation!

Ambella Home Red Wine Decor

Red wine decor tones are also a super choice with neutrals, especially gray. Gray usually needs to be paired with a color to give it life, and the gray/wine combo is always sophisticated. This living room featuring decorative Ambella Home tables from the Antoinette collection is a good illustration of the color combination.

Wine Colored Buffet ProvenceYou'll notice that the first two photos didn't have floor-to-ceiling wine painted walls. Instead, they just feature the color on either the upper or lower half of the wall. That's a good way to enjoy wine colors in smaller doses if the full walls feel too much for you. Or you can paint only a small accent wall or perhaps the interior of an alcove lined with book shelves.

Or just choose a piece of furniture in a rich burgundy color, like this tall chest of drawers or dresser in our gallery. The Chesapeake chest of drawers is crafted in hardwood with a lovely wine painted finish.

Featuring red wine colored furniture and home accents gives you all the warmth of the color to serve as a focal point in your room, without the commitment of a full decor job. I'll drink to that!
