As spring does its thing, I found some great ways to decorate the garden with flower pots, whatever your style! Last week I made up all these flower pots for my mom for Mother's Day.

The bigger three on the right are full-sun for mom's front porch and the 6 on the left are for shade on the back porch, including 2 hanging baskets and an aloe plant for summer sunburns. I also took mom out for lunch and a pedicure.

I also cleaned up her yard for spring 3 weeks ago and put down 58 bags of mulch and 6 bags of rocks.

Whew! That was a lot of yard yoga!  After I made up all the flower pots I was inspired to look for interesting ways to display flower pots in the garden.  I found some great ideas to share!

This is a fairly classic way to use flower pots. The pots line a set of outdoor steps up to the front door or perhaps from the garden to patio doors.  The thing that struck me about this arrangement outside a house in Philadelphia is that the pots are graduated in size, getting larger toward the top, so they lead the eye (and the visitor!) up to the door.  It's a nice spin on a traditional arrangement and very easy to do. The single-color flowers also add to the bold statement.

Color plays a big part in this striking display too. Just pop a simple flower pot on top of a bright cafe chair for a very chic look. This photo was taken in France - you could have guessed, right? The French have a knack of making the simplest things look wonderful.  The combination of color, a sculptural outline, and the raised level of the flower pot make this a nice idea for a patio or deck. Maybe you have old or damaged pieces of small furniture kicking around the house or forgotten in the garage that you could repurpose as a plant holder? I wouldn't do this with an antique chair, but for cheaper pieces or thrift shop finds, it's a winner!

Somebody got creative with a dead tree! It looks like they painted the trunk of the tree with a vibrant blue before stringing colorful flower pots up it and adding pretty outdoor lights too. This is such a fun idea to turn a potential eyesore into a focal point.

Finally, this photo looks like it was taken in Tuscany, but it's actually in Oregon! It is similar to the flower pots in the first picture as the pots are used to line an outdoor staircase, but actually I think the design idea is bigger than this. The row of pots attached to the walls on both sides create a wonderful architectural statement. You could fix flower pot holders to the walls to accent any architectural or landscape feature. How about hanging them on a wall in an eye-level row along a pathway to lead visitors through a floral vista? (Make sure the path is wide enough - you don't want guests literally getting an eyeful of the flowers!)
