2014 Trends: True Blue Decor

While reading about the latest interior design trends for 2014, I noticed that blue decor is hitting a lot of headlines! These aren't shy and retiring shades of blue either, but true blue decor that makes a strong statement.

Dark Blue decorThis House Beautiful magazine slideshow of design trends says that navy blue will be big in 2014. Considering that people usually think of blue as a 'cool' color, this traditional living room still feels cozy and welcoming. I think that is because there is a lot of texture and detail in the space. The sofa is soft and inviting, with a nice variety of throw pillows scattered on it to tempt us in. The books also add visual interest and the wall sconces keep the lighting intimate.

Vintage Sideboard in its new Maryland home! EuroLuxHome.com

Seeing this room reminded me of a client spotlight from nearly a year ago. We shared this photo of Irene's dining room in Maryland. Irene was clearly ahead of the trends! Or perhaps it's just fair to say that classic style is always in fashion. Irene bought a vintage French Mid-Century Modern sideboard from us and placed it in her dining room. The dark blue decor looks so very elegant, and the Art Deco chandelier makes a stunning accent.

Antique French chairs for navy blue decorIf you're looking for accessories for your blue decor, this set of six antique Mechelen chairs would look terrific in the dining room. They would also work as side chairs anywhere in the house. Carved in the Mechelen style in around 1900, the oak antique dining chairs from Belgium are crowned with handsome lion heads on the finials and a brass handle on the chair rails. The navy, gold, and cream upholstery has been relatively recently done and the classic stripe pattern is timelessly elegant.

Deep and saturated turquoise is another example of blue decor that's topping the trend list this year according to Elle Decor magazine. I love the relaxed sea breeze feel of turquoise - it turns any room into an oasis.

Turquoise blue decor accent bookcaseEven if you don't want to go all-over turquoise, a few turquoise accents can really lift a space. For example, this new Mediterranean bookcase will add a gorgeous pop of color. The distressed turquoise splatter finish on the solid oak bookcase makes it a great match for a French Country style interior or even for a cozy coastal cottage. With the turquoise detail on this bookcase, it really does feel like we're relaxing in the south of France - a lazy sunny day image to beat the gray day blues!

Blue and White Delft

Antique Delftware always adds an airy dose of refreshing blue and white to a room, and if you group your pottery collection like this it looks even more fantastic! My post on Delftware ceramics tells you more about the history and various styles of these eternally appealing blue and white Delft treasures.

The color blue is most commonly associated with harmony, faithfulness, and confidence. I guess we can all see why true blue decor is top of the interior design charts for 2014!
